The green beans came in the mail today.

I roasted four batches, two with the poppery II and two in the dog bowl.

The poppery II roasts too fast. I added an extension cord into the mix, but it didn't decrease the roast time significantly. The roast is only taking about six minutes and the insides aren't roasted enough. The seam between the two halves is staying green.

The second roast in the dog bowl seemed to be the best. I went between FC+ and Vienna. There are divots in the beans. I couldn't cool them very fast passing them back and forth with the colander.

The dog bowl batches are taking nearly 20 minutes but the results are better. I cupped one batch after about 4 hours of rest against one of Sweet Maria's roasts that is about 6 days old. The freshness really is evident in the home roast and the quality of all of the SM beans really blows me away.

Keep a timer (or watch) in front of you and target first pops for six minutes. If you don't reach that, address your combo of batch size (too large) and/or HG wattage (too low.) If you want to ramp up the temp by bringing the HG closer, you can avoid divots by stirring faster, but you shouldn't have to work excessively hard, better to lower the batch. Find a consistent distance from the beans (it's a physical/visual learning curve.) That distance should allow for coming closer (and stirring faster) when you want to ramp up the temp (for me, this is often at the start of 1st c until it's clear that the beans require less heat to keep the temp rising (clues come from smell, maybe a little smoke, and heat on your stirring hand and face.)

Let your tools determine your batch size. There's a sweet spot of HG power, bowl size, and batch size that will make it "easy" to accomplish a roast in 10-12 minutes. Sometimes a faster roast is a good idea, but I can't recall any benefit to going beyond, say, 12-14 minutes.

Even with owning a modded Hottop drum roaster I still use the Bowl and Spoon with the heat gun every now and then as I don't always want or have a full roast load of beans. Great visual feedback on the roast development and I use a combo timer thermometer below which helps keep the roast on track. Roast results are every bit as good as the Hottop when you get it right.Image
