Don Pachi Geisha, Best of Panama winner, available green in private sale [CLOSED]

Postby another_jim on Thu Jun 30, 2011 2:46 pm

One non-auction, 60KG bag of the Don Pachi Esmeralda natural, which sold at auction for $111.50 per pound is available for private sale. If the deal goes through, the price in Chicago will be $56.50 per pound green; buyers can pick up or pay shipping and handling.

If the deal goes through, the coffee will also be available as a custom roast through Ipsento. Email me as well if you might be interested in this.

I sampled this coffee alongside some other BOP lots earlier this year. It outshone the other DP and WP Geisha lots, and tastes similar to a super Ethiopian or an extra heavy and sweet Geisha. Unlike the famous WP Esmeralda, it is eminently suitable for SO espresso.

$56 per pound is a breathtaking price. But the Geishas and super Ethiopians have been discovered by the exploding specialty coffee markets in the far east, so the demand and price of these coffees is skyrocketing, and will probably continue to do so in the next few years. Bottom line, if you pass this up now, you may regret it in a few years time, when these coffees are five times as costly.

Reason enough to give thanks daily for my pedestrian sense of taste...

There's been a good number of takers, but the offer is still open, and will be till Tuesday morning.

This is the first year Geisha naturals are being sold, and the Don Pachi could well become a storied coffee. So if you miss out now; you may be kicking yourself about it in a few years time.

I think the fact that I've read and re-read this thread about a dozen times tells me I should have pulled the trigger just out of curiousity... I take consolidation in the fact that I highly doubt I could do the beans any justice with my roaster though. The more I read these forums the more I realize I sorta wasted a lot of time as a home roaster. I've roasted for just shy of nine years now and never took notes of anything, on equipment that made serviceable coffee, but likely wouldn't let a bean like this ^ shine.
Fresh out of the roaster: SM Ethiopian Yirg Grade 1, Compass Ethiopian Sidama
Next batch: Guatemala Geisha...

To all who've ordered -- I haven't heard back from Tim at Ipsento yet. On the home roasting side, we have roughly 60 pounds of orders, which was the level I thought we needed. The rest of the bag was to go to a few commercial micro-roasters, and that part of the deal is looking iffy now.

Whether this deal makes it or falls through, the difficulty proves that packaging these top coffees in 19th century 60 kilo jute bags is ridiculous. They would last longer and be easier to sell of they were vacuum packed in 10 Kg Mylar bags. The top Brazilian Facendas are doing this now, as is Esmeralda and few other of the top Centrals; but it should become the standard for all high end coffees.

Wow, I hope some more becomes available. It takes me some time to make up my mind and I did not make the dead line so please keep us posted if more becomes available.
