Charging at a High ET without Tipping/Scorching/Charring? - Page 10

Postby JohnB. on Wed May 18, 2011 1:11 pm

I'm roasting 227g batches & typically drop from 380*F ET to 400*F ET without the scorching/charring issues I used to get dropping at lower ET temps. Over the past year I've added larger drum fins, boasted input voltage with a Variac & started running the fan on low from 300*BT up to just before 1C then full fan/low heat until I get control of the rise. Probably a combination of everything but I now get nice even (uncharred) roasts (City-FC+) without reducing batch size while using higher drop temps.

That's what I love about this hobby- infinite variables.
Thanks for the info! Next batch I'll experiment with those suggestions. I would like to work on the drum fins too- is there a thread discussing the how-to's of that?

Thanks! I've actually had a couple roasts where I saw charring and I just wrote it off as part of the learning curve. I'm at the point where there's a whole lot of variables to try on the way to knowing what this roaster can and can't do.

I tried to find the answer to this but just couldn't find it. So if it's already posted then I apologize for my lack of Googling skills. What is the benefit to charging the roaster at a high ET? I guess this would decrease the drying phase time, which is a good idea?
