Canned green coffee beans?

Postby farmroast on Sat Mar 06, 2010 12:37 am

Saw these canned green beans recently. Is there a useful storage concept here? Cans can be done quite cheaply. There's a growing amount of small specialty food processing facilities.

Are those the paint-can style, or machined? Put them in dry, or I'd be a little nervous to open one up in 20 years... unless it's MM, I guess.

They are sealed. I just want a really good bean to last until the next crop year. And a little longer.
A can of "El Salvador Peaberry "Aida's Grand Reserve"" canned by the farm, in-country, then shipped would interest me. :D I wouldn't need all of my greens done this way.

Hasn't vacuum packed in mylar, which is how all Ms Battle's coffees and other auction coffees are shipped nowadays, obsoleted canning?

Yes, I purchased a 5kg vacuumed block a few years back, but once opened I had to repack it in smaller packages. Obviously this would only be useful for home roasters.

So are you referring to canning at origin, or canning at home? I recall you having some success with foodsaver + mason jar, and have adopted it myself for green storage. How would canning be different?

If you look down the page and read the various ways they recommend roasting the beans, it makes me think they don't have a clue. Broiled beans anyone?
