Behmor Modified

Postby farmroast on Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:03 am

In the past I upgraded to a 50rpm drum motor, added BT probe, and ET tc. Finally got a chance to turn it totally manual with the help of a visiting friend. No more brain, circuit board or thermostats.
Every component (7) has its own on/off toggle mounted on the side of the electronics end panel. The main heating elements go to a variac. The 12vdc stuff is on a separate power supply.

Just got all the wires tied up and the roaster back together tonight and will play with it tomorrow. I've only roasted a few batches with it when I did the BT and drum motor mods a couple years ago and then lent it out.
Should be interesting.

Did the first 3 roasts today. Everything worked well. The biggest drag being still searching around for the best place for the ET tc. Anyone with ET added behmor experience? It reacted to variac adjustments really well. The BT fc was starting in the 390s so that's working right. I think it will produce some really exceptional roasts once I figure out how to drive it

Outstanding! How in the heck did you do a BT Probe though?

Roasted a couple full 1lb batches of 2 different Guatemala HB. With full rated 1050watts power was able to ramp from 300f BT to first crack, cutting the voltage to 105V at 385BT to ease into first (between 395-400BT) and made the ramp in 4:10mins and 4:20mins ramp time. Pretty reasonable. Without the thermostat kicking in it might of had a higher MET than stock, but the beans didn't show any signs of damage.

Here's a picture of the full setup. I added a post on my blog about it too.

Wish you a good day!

You really need all these mods to get a good roasting?

I would by satisfied by knowing how to switch the heating elements on and off.

My goal is to stretch time between CR1 and Cr2 to have better control over the crucial moments in the last leg.
Me feeling is, that temp is too high towards the end. (have 220 Volt)
My measure point is on the left side directly obve the bearing.
It is certainly not exact BT but it has good correspondence with reported roasting logs.
Pr 4 shows a short temp-drop on the way from leg 1-2.

For better cooling I open the door quick after finishing the roast.

Come from AUSTRIA and would be glad to get some advice from an expert.

Thank you!
