Zassenhaus burr damaged?

Postby howrad on Sun Jul 31, 2011 7:53 pm

I've been using this Zassenhaus Turkish mill for 8 or 9 years, and as I finally bought a Silvia machine, I broke down the grinder for cleaning. When I saw the outer burr teeth, they looked rough, to say the least. Is this damage or casting flaws?

I've been using an Aeropress until now, but I notice on my Silvia the pull is quick and blonds very early, and fine grinding is a work out for the arms.

I'm open to any advice about replacement, since I hoped to move up to a Preciso or Pharos soon.

best,

Rough is an understatement in my opinion. Lol. Whether it's a cast defect or worn out burr, you are definitely better off buying a new grinder. :P

For the question, I am guessing it's probably casting flaws or you've had rocks going through the Zass?

Actually, thats how the Zass burrs tend to look, the new ones too. I was surprised with mine also...Their casting tends to be sloppy. Though they look non-precision, they still should make a decent fine grind. Unless of course you are finding that it can no longer grind fine enough for espresso, then yes they are a bit worn out.

I have a couple Zass mills - some newer and some a bit older - with burr sets that look nothing like that.

I just bought a Prolex tall grinder, so we'll see how that compares. The Zass was always ok for my Aeropress, but it seems a tad coarse for my Silvia.

Those burrs should work quite well for a pepper mill, but that is about it.
