Which model Mazzer is this? Name that grinder!

Postby lukasz on Tue Aug 16, 2011 7:53 pm

Hi folks. I bought a La Pavoni lever machine a few weeks ago after using a dependable Starbucks branded Saeco for 5 or 6 years. Of course I quickly realized that my grinder wasn't going to cut it anymore.

To make a long story short, does anyone want to take a stab at what model grinder I just scored on ebay? I am 99% certain that I know but I will not reveal my best guess. I've emailed the seller to confirm but he has not gotten back to me yet.

If those are vents on the side, then it looks like a Major.

That is my opinion as well. I can't imagine what else they would be, and they're in the correct place for a Major. I ordered some Major burrs from Chris Coffee and attached one of the images for them to confirm. They said that they thought it was a Super Jolly, but I suppose they didn't notice the vents. Darn it, I want new burrs here at the same time as this monster.

Well I finally got my hands on the grinder this weekend and accidentally spent half of the day cleaning it up. I started snapping photos after a few minutes so thought I'd update this thread with them.

Yep, definitely a Major

Beginning the cleanup process. This is going to be messier than I had anticipated

The patient on the operating table. Thank god for air compressors!

The previous owner had shipped me 1/4 pound of ground espresso between the upper burr carrier and the burr!

Next to the old grinder. Now I have no excuse for crappy espresso.

The old burrs actually looked to be perfectly fine to my untrained eye

I did not take photo of my slight rewiring. I shorted the upper and lower switches so that the knob (if I had one. It broke in transit :( ) is simply on/off. I also gutted the doser (there is no way to completely take the bottom off, right?) and put it back on, with the soda bottle inside it. Fits quite well!

I've been playing with the grinder a bit but am not quite about dialing it in considering the La Pavoni is only a few weeks old as well. Any tips on a starting position, from zero (burrs touching)?

Start about 10 notches up from your zero point & go from there if you are dosing 14-15g.

It is more like 12-12.5 with the 49mm La Pavoni basket. I think that I have it in the ballpark but some confirmation is always nice.

Hi, In relation to your question about gutting the doser. I saw a Super Jolly where the guy had drilled the rivets out at the bottom of the doser, and was able to remove the base. Then he used the doser body and a retro fitted funnel (a red one) for the bottom, to create a doserless chute. It looked pretty good, and the rivets were replaced by bolts when he wanted to have a doser again. Not for everybody, I am sure. Nice grinder you got there! I can't wait to get mine buffed and finished and rebuilt again. Those 83mm burrs are awesome!
