When to start grinder when single dosing?

Grinders are one of the keys to exceptional espresso. Discuss them here.

Apologies if this has been asked before, couldn't find it.

Do those who single dose start the grinder before or after beans are added to the hopper/throat? With a big grinder stalling doesn't seem to be an issue when the beans are sitting in the burrs at startup, and when you think about it that's how a non-single-dosed grinder would work. I haven't noticed a difference in flow rate when changing methods but I feel like it must make some sort of difference.

I like to start the grinder after I add the beans and put the lid on the top of my Vario's hopper... it's quieter that way.

Load the beans then grind. Less likely to have beans popcorn out.

Usually I start the grinder at 9 o'clock in the morning.
