The Waring grinder timer is back

Postby Marshall on Tue Feb 24, 2009 3:40 pm

Actually, I don't know that they ever stopped making it, but I couldn't find them for a long time. They were made for commercial blenders, but work well with coffee grinders.

I use the Model CAT1 (pictured below). It is certified for commercial kitchens, which means, among other things, that it has no openings for grounds to enter and wipes off with a swipe of a cloth (dry or wet). It automatically resets to your preselected countdown time after each grind and has a "pulse" button to add a bit of coffee, if your preferred dose is not in whole seconds. It doesn't take up much space, but is heavy enough to stay wherever you put it on your counter.

Typical retail is about $79 U.S. from various dealers, and it handles 15 amps.

I discussed the timer a little bit in my thread on timers for grinders. Sadly, it's got only 1 second increments, making it unacceptable (IMO) for fast grinders like a Super Jolly or Robur. It would work well for a Mini or a Kony, or a grinder in that league, I think. For fast grinders, one should consider a 0.1s granularity timer.

You're probably right in that heavy commercial class. It has worked well with my Mazzer Mini and Cimbali Max Hybrid, which are a little slower (6-7 seconds for a single and 9-11 for a double) .

0.1s timers are mandatory IMO, even for laggards like a Mini or MC4.
Currently at 9.5s on the MC4 and 8.2s on the MKX.

It is possible to change the grind to accommodate full second increments,
but doing so adversely impacts the clarity

I use half-second pulses when I necessary. Ultimately I dose by looking at what is in the basket.

Marshall, a great alternative to the Waring is the GraLab 450, which Nicholas may have touched upon in his timer-discussion. I got one new on eBay for about $70 works fantastic - especially because it does give you 1/10's of a second for 0.0 - 9.9 seconds. When you get to double digits (> 10 sec), you lose the tenths. For my CMH, that's fine - I get 18 grams in about 7.8 seconds.

The following is a snip from one that's already sold on eBay:

Pulsed doses adversely impact the clarity

I got to play with Ian's timer when we tested the CMH and the MXK and it spoiled me rotten, had to get one for myself!

Hum, what do you need a timer for then?

For my Mazzer Mini Doser I use a timer thats adjustable to half seconds which works pretty fine, but I wish I had a more precise one. I don't think that a timer that does only whole seconds is adequate for grinding as long as your grinder isn't really lame - just for the ones who are planing on getting a timer and wonder what the criteria might be.
