Wall mounted grinder suitable for espresso??

Postby robert mayrand on Wed Jan 20, 2010 11:36 am

I would be interested in buying a manual wall mounted grinder but was wondering if anyone on the board has experience with them. Is there any with adjustable grinder that can grind fine enough for espresso? any brand recommendation? I'm already using a PeDe manual grinder from OE and I'm more than satisfied with manual grinding....just would like to expand the grinding option for my girlfriend who is now intested enough to buy her own coffee but who has difficulties holding the little grinder.

Thanks.

I have a PeDe (Peter Dienes) and it does grind fine enough for espresso and is easy to use compared to the box mills. But as with the box mills it's a bit of a crap shoot to get a good one that will grind fine. I think the odds are better with a Zassenhaus or Dienes than other manufacturers. And there are new retro wall mount grinders that look the same but fear are made for display more than usability. The catch cups are often chipped on the older ones which can be an issue. Be prepared to spend $100.+ for a good one.

Hi Robert,

I regularly use a KYM wall mount (from OE) for espresso with my lever machines. It is very nice and easy to use and turn with minimal force. The only minor inconvenience is that for larger doses you may have to empty the catch cup twice; and, my adjustment is internal, so I need to brush it out regularly. Otherwise, it's really a pleasure to use, and you can dose from the catch cup as well. I would definitely recommend one -- and-- when one pops up in the espresso section at OE you know it will do the job.

I can agree more with you about the quality of the grinder that OE sells. But I'm afraid that Doug might have slow down on the grinder rebuild it's been a while that I've seen anything on his web site, I remember when I bought mine that there was always a few up for grab........anyway I think I'll email him to see if there's something coming. Any picture of your grinder???

Hi Robert,

I'm attaching a pic of my wall mount grinder for you to have a look...with 3 screws it stays firm in the wall, no movement. It has a nice wide range for espresso.
