Versalab M3 burrs lasted less than 100 pounds, bad burrs or what? - Page 3

Postby denniskeating on Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:08 pm

oltimer, that sounds like the situation i had with the stock burrset on my M3. they started out that way, and stayed that way for two and 1/2 yrs, untill i recently changed them out. i was not wanting to complain, but it seemed different than other units. the brand EPNW sold is ACASCO made in spain for $20.

tekimono, my stock burrset had a small amt of nicks from the rock i encountered months ago. the squirting has remained the same, i would say, although the taste is just great!

offtopic: is it me that fills a single basket wrongly? i fill them past the cone shaped part up into the top where it expands out to 58 mm and where the spring would fit the basket - this takes 11-12 grams. i don't know any other way? comments?

Dennis,

My original burrset (2 years and 9 months old) didn't start out like yours, but the old one is now on the "3" and the new one was on "2" for similar pours. When my M3 was new, it was around "5" (my scale is centered so that the "4" and "5" are at the 7 and 5 o'clock position respectively).

Thanks for the info re the ACASCO, I might pick up a set in October when I'm in NY. Do they look like the originals with the channels cut all the way out, or like the replacements I got (without the channels)?

Off topic: I've been using the LM single since I got my 1st GS3, about three years ago and only fill up the bottom part; doses vary with the beans, but goes from 6.8 to 7.6 gr. I tried filling the basket up at times but didn't care for the results, but I must admit I didn't try very hard and being somewhat lazy, went back to my old ways.

oltimer, sorry i was away on vacation. the replacements i purchased indeed have the extra groove in them. they are shiny silver vs. grey oxide (?) around the edges, too., but same configuration.
i switched up to a 15 gram basket for now i'll have to play with singles again later on. no squirts so far also.

Hi Dennis, you mean you don't check HB while on vacation
:) Just got the answer from Versalab. They're sending me a new set with the slots. They found out early on that the slots contribute hugely to the flavor and have always specified slots to their suppliers. So nobody knows how this one slipped past. I'll update again when I have them. Meanwhile I'm also surviving with a Synesso 15gr basket

i hope the replacements have the right amount of extra fine adjustment available to you so the burrs don't touch each other.

tekomino, i thought i would update you. the new burrset is working better than my original stock ones ever did. when i first used them, i was brewing singles, and had squirting problems, but since then i have switched back to 15 gr double basket, and have never had a squirt happen once. great find!

My new set arrived a couple of weeks ago and gives me all the headroom I could possibly need, and more importantly, I'm delighted with my shots. One thing's for sure, I won't wait two years/400 lbs for the next replacement—more like a year with my usage.

Many thanks tekomino (Dennis) for starting this thread, and for the information regarding the replacement burrs.

I too ordered a couple of spare sets. I fitted one of the new sets this weekend and could not believe the difference between the original burrs (now 3 years old) and these new burrs. not only does the actual sound whilst grinding appear to be much quieter but the setting for a similar grind is now approximately 1.25 steps closer to the fine end of the range. whether this is due to the actual overall depth of the burrs being less on the new ones i am not sure as i did not measure them before fitting.

Whatever the reason I am very pleased at the improvement, thank you once again.

Best regards
Eric
