Used Mazzer Super Jolly Cleaning

Postby aindfan on Tue Dec 30, 2008 9:49 pm

Today I had the luck of buying a Mazzer Super Jolly (Rio) for $100. Why such a low price? Take a look at the pictures. I've got quite a bit of work ahead, but from what I was told by the seller, the entire doser can go in the dishwasher and everything else can soak in vinegar. For the top burr carrier threads, he suggested a rag dipped in vinegar (I wouldn't want to pour vinegar on that perfect working motor, would I?).

Any tips are appreciated. I'll start doing some research and look up others' restoration work. I will of course be performing the doser vane mod and adding a Schechtermatic Schnozzola (spelling?).

Front of the doser, with the leftovers of a Starbucks sticker:

Some shots from the top of the doser. Neither a doser lid nor a hopper were included, and I found that my spare 58mm tamper works great for the hopper and a demitasse plate works well for the doser cover (but sometimes rattles a bit).

The main reason for the amazing price:

A shot into the throat. I test ground some beans, but otherwise the burrs were somewhat clean(ish). I'll be ordering a new set anyway.

The burrs:

The gunk between the top burr and the top burr carrier. A little flake of the condensed dust is visible on the bottom left.

I'm going away for two weeks on Thursday so anything I don't finish tomorrow will wait until after I get back.

Shouldn't be too much work, right? </sarcasm>

I think that will clean up real good!! It will look better in no time. You might need to be creative with the case. I hope it wasn't caused by dropping it....or running it over with a steam roller.

Look at that grinder case!
...and people don't believe me when I tell them a Mazzer can take a direct hit from a stinger missile
All kidding aside, it doesn't matter if that Maz took a nasty spill off a counter - I wouldn't be surprised if it works perfectly.
Good luck with the cleaning, it should turn out beautiful.
Maybe a little auto body work might fix up that case, a little body filler and a new paint job

The back side doesn't bother me too much, but if I have too much time to spare I'll think of some way to work on it. The motor sounds perfect ("hmmmmmmmm") and it grinds decently. No taste tests yet (still need to pass the parts through vinegar and probably run some grinds just for kicks.

Thats funny, I had that same grinder on their bench until one of the guys pointed out the hole in the back. I probably would have taken it for $100 also. Mine had the same old grounds & it cleaned up fine. I scrubbed off the big stuff & then threw all the pieces in a hot Cafiza bath. If you are going to repaint it some body filler will take care of the hole in the back. I painted the Rio cup emblem black & mounted it on my coffee stuff drawer.
If it's noisy throw in a set of new bearings. I got a pair at Napa for about $30 & I can give you some tips on changing them if you decide to replace them.

Man, if you fix that hole in the back, I would love to see how. That's incredible. It looks like it was in an automobile accident!

You wouldn't necessarily "fix" it, you would just make it disappear. A couple coats of body filler, primer & paint and you would never know it was there.

Thanks for mentioning that. I dumped the pieces in JoeGlo and piggybacked the doser on a run of the dishwasher. Now only one word can describe my cleaning progress:

Done!

Now all I have to do is brush out the grinder itself and clean out the threads, and I'll be dialing it in by tomorrow morning!

Trivia question: what's that electrical tape doing next to the disassembled doser?

I was going to do the tape mod on my late model SJ but it sweeps pretty clean so I haven't bothered yet. I went a different route with my Ansonia* SJ;Image

This one is used for press pot & decaf espresso so I didn't want the doser. Having used both I definitely prefer the doser set up for my primary espresso grinder. That anti clumping wire grid makes getting at the grounds stuck in the chute a real pita. It will be out of there shortly.

John, here comes the long overdue THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate your tip, and I'm definitely glad that I went out to Ansonia and got the SJ on a whim.

And, of course, thanks to all who replied here.
