Upgrade a Macap M4 stepped doserless?!?

Postby boinkie on Thu Jul 16, 2009 5:15 pm

Help is needed please!

Two years ago I bought a Macap M4 stepped doserless grinder. Since I wasn't informed very well by the shop, I didn't know that the grinder is designed for grinding into a bag. Because of the huge clumps and the rests of coffee in the snout I was wondering if it is possible to replace the snout for a doser? I searched very well, but couldn't find much information.

Second question: less important though, I was wondering if an "upgrade" to a stepless can be made easily. There was a topic last year and it seems that there is a kit available, but I don't know where to buy it. Are there any experts here that did the upgrade/change of anybody who knows a good parts store?

Thanks for the help.

Greetings,
Anja

You can get a kit to upgrade to stepless from Chris' Coffee. If you look in the review of grinders there is a link to the thread where someone made their's stepless.

Despite its clumping, the Macap doserless does have its fans, most notably Ian (cafeIKE), who recommends grinding per dose. He posted a photo of his "snout clearing tool" and commented on doser vs. doserless in Have Rancilio Rocky, looking for an alternative (willing to pay more):

I asked Chris in April about that kit to convert my stepped M4 to stepless, and he said:

I have never sold any conversion parts and do not have any at this time either.

It must be a different place even though the guy who did it in that thread said he got it from Chris.

BTW, that snout cleaning tool works great. I twisted up some hanger which works ok too.

Thanks for the help. It doesn't help a lot, though.

I asked with Chris's, they actually DO have this kit (?!), it cost's $39,95. I got the answer from Jim.

It is not possible to convert the machine to a dosered one though. So, I could get my grinder stepless, but it costs a lot and then I probably still have a lot of clumps.

Anyway, I think I am going to buy a new grinder, changing the one I have for the new Mahlkönig Vario.

Thanks for the help and the thinking.

Hi Anja,

do you mean that you bought a MC4 instead of a M4 doserless? The MC4 is a different model and a deli grinder - the M4 doserless is a comparatively rare beast. This level of grinder will clump, though you can do a 'chicken wire' mod inside the chute to break up the clumps (consider forward motion as well as gravity in this, as the clumps tumble forward as they break up). I'm fairly sure that the doserless Macap M4 preferred for espresso is the M4D (digital timer, doserless version) which looks a lot like a mini-e but with a nicer LCD panel.
