Unexplained grind setting drift

Postby PKR on Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:02 pm

I have noticed recently that my two year old SJ seems to be grinding finer. For beans I used to grind at 0, I now have to grind at about .3-.4 for them not to clog the portafilter. This is true of a couple of different brands of beans, from different stores.

I just ran some Grindz through and that made no difference. I don't grind more than .5 pounds a week on average.

I don't mind setting the grinder coarser, but was just curious why this is happening. I don't think the collar with the grind markings has in any way been shifted. Any ideas?

It could blend centric and not grinder. You do not mention if you have tried different blends/roasters but it could simply be a blend change by your vendor. Humidity plays havoc with grind settings as well. The other option is your burrs but given your consumption, they are just broken in. Could have taken a rock as well but you would have noticed that.

OK, I'm just not going to worry about it! :)
I'll post if things change further. Thanks.

If you mean 3 to 4 notches, that's not a trivial change, but not out of the question. For a given coffee, the grind setting as the coffee ages migrates 1 to 1-1/2 notches finer to maintain the same flavor profile and the shot volume decreases slightly.

On a related note, some grinders require more adjustments than others (see the Titan Grinder Project for more details). I don't find the Super Jolly demanding, but in my experience, it requires more fine adjustments than a conical grinder (e.g., Mazzer Robur, Compak K10 WBC, etc.). I don't know why.

during the break in period my kony e also "drifted" outside of the range on the sticker on the collar and i now grind 3-5 marks finer than the range indicated by the sticker. while i do some minor adjustments for different beans, generally my setting is a few marks finer that the sticker range. this also happened on my previous mini e

when i look at the setting on roburs in most coffee shops, they seem to be dead on (or close to) the arrow on the mazzer sticker

how does mazzer determine where to put these stickers before the burrs are broken in; has something "slipped" on the grinder which caused this or is this all not important

Once you open up the machine and remove the upper burr carrier for cleaning, there is a good chance your start here sticker will be way off base, or you could get lucky. They probably tighten the carrier until the burrs touch, then they know how many numbers back to turn it to get it in the correct range.
