Uneven grind with Zassenhaus Santiago Espresso - Page 2

Are you going to sell the bracket as a kit for those of us already using a Skerton? I have something similar to get me by until something more finished comes along. I fabricated a bearing to fit between the Plastic and the outer burr from the metal lid off a peanut can - you need to punch 4 holes so the 4 raised screw studs that the screws holding the outer burr retainer are reinserted into are exposed - a file Is handy to shape the metal too since the tolerances are tight. I got it right on the first try - measure twice, cut once.

At this time, we have no plans for a mod kit for the Skerton. In part because there's a bit more to it than just popping the bearing in & grinding some beans for it to work at optimum performance...and optimum performance is often what is expected from a kit.

The hardest part for me was making the holes in the right place since I only had a screw and a screw driver - it takes a while to widen a punched hole in metal. The lack of speed gave me time to study the set up and make only small adjustments - around 30 minutes worth of cutting and filing get the job done - the next one would be even quicker thanks to the template from the first fabrication.

The assembly is the easy part.

By tightening the grind adjustment nut at the top, the burrs come together tightly - the bottom burr can be in only one place (obviously the right place) for the 4 screw holes to line up for reassembly. Self adjusting mod here for me. Maybe I will take mine apart and cut some blanks to send as Christmas gifts...

I'm interested in this lower bearing mod for my Skerton as well. If I can't buy it, I'll try making it or just getting on Eric's Christmas list!

After using my modified Skerton for a while, I though it might be appropriate to add some comments.

1) It works.

2) I did need to re-tighten the 4 screws that hold the outer burr retainer in place (my plate goes around these small posts) - I hand fitted the plate but evidently some settling has taken place. this adjustment was done only once after grinding some beans - the plate has not worked loose again so I do not think longer screws are a necessity.

3) No "tweaking" is required to produce even size grinding - Maybe because the grinder is still relatively new (less than one year old) and everything still fits tightly.

4) the center hole in the plate (remember, it is fabricated out of metal scavenged from a nut container) is larger now. It might be enlarged because I took the inner burr out (originally I used the shaft to finish stretching the hole so it was snug) to examine the plate for wear several times - but it still stabilizes the center shaft. If I turn the handle while holding the grinder (without the bottom jar attached) at eye level and watching the inner burr turn at a French press size setting, hear no burr rub and the path of the inner burr is smooth and level.

Was planning to buy a Zass Santiago, but scared now after reading this, do all new models have the plastic?
