Two questions about an Astoria branded Major.

Postby CRCasey on Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:50 am

I have a couple of questions about the Major I have...

I am wondering about it's age. It has no serial numbers that I can find on the outside. It has a basic lever type toggle on and off switch. The only other marking it has is a asset tag that says Starbucks 0001967. Any idea how old it is?

My other question is for the e-timer dosed people. I am building my own timer. My question is whether or not going below .1 sec on the grind time would be of any use? I could do timing in smaller steps below that but is there any reason?

TIA for your input.

The Robur-E has timing increments to 0.05 secs. The Nino, which I use far more often, has 0.1sec increments and I have personally felt no need for any greater timer resolution than that. I believe both grinders are in the same ballpark as the Major for grinding speed, ie fast.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Cecil,

I agree with Chris, I doubt there's any need for less than 0.1s changes.

What uC are you using to make the timer?

I have a couple of Pic 16f88's sitting arround spare. A 4 bit lcd 2x20, a rotary encoder and a two stage (prevents damage from back emf kick on motor cutoff) low voltage dc controlled SSR round out the basic hardware. With a nice metal case about $30.00 in parts total.

Hi Cecil,

sounds like a nice little project, the rotary encoder should be a nice addition and something a bit different than normal switches.

Good luck and post photos!

0.1 should be fine. IMO there's enough variation and enough variables that it's unlikely you'll be able to see or finesse the difference in yield that would result from an extra 0.05 in granularity.
