Trouble replacing burrs of LeLit PL53 - Help!

Postby julies on Wed Feb 09, 2011 1:00 pm

So after much frustration and talking with Jim at 1st line, we decided that our problem with our beans not feeding well to the burrs was that the burrs were dull. We have ordered and received the burrs, but now we need to know how to get the upper burr out to replace it. We can get everything else out, just not the upper burr. Can anyone help with this? Pictures would be great if possible. Thanks in advance.

Well the good news is we got both burrs out and the new in. Quick FYI to anyone considering replacing the burrs on this model; the part doesn't come with any instructions and tech support from the retailer is $30 for the first 1/2 hr. At any rate, we were able to get everything apart except the top burr from the carrier. It is plain to see that there is no screw or anything locking the burr in place, but boy is it tight! There has to be some trick, but we just kept at it and gently secured the top carrier in a table top style-vice using the outer ring of the top carrier to support and the vice to gently hold the threaded part below the outer ring, then used the widest (also somewhat thicker), flat-blade screwdriver we had, rested that against the burr, and gently tapped the screwdriver down to slide the burr out of the carrier. Wah la! Be sure to be cautious when setting the top carrier in the vice because the carrier appears to be plastic. One other FYI for anyone attempting this replacement is that the lower burr bolt is reverse threaded and uses a 10mm socket. Best of luck to anyone taking on this work. It is possible to do without breaking any parts. Wish we had taken pictures of this to be more helpful. Sorry.

Thank you for your post - I have been wondering what the burr replacement would be like once I got around to needing it. So, to clarify:

To replace the bottom burr, you unscrew the reverse-threaded nut holding it down to the shaft.
To replace the top burr, you secure the plastic burr carrier and gently tap the cylindrical burr out.

Did I get that right? Would you say that it is worth replacing the entire top burr carrier with the burr installed instead of attempting to nudge the burr out?

Thanks again!

Yes, you have that correct. No, I would not replace the burr carrier...it is a snug fit and you might feel like you could break the carrier, but once the burr starts to move it slides out relatively easily, just be careful with the screwdriver as to not damage the carrier.

We found instructions with pictures on-line that show how to disassemble to clean the grinder and do this about monthly. Great instructions to reference if you haven't already found them.

The new burrs do make a difference in how well the coffee beans feed.

Could you post a link to those cleaning instructions?
