Super Jolly Doserless mod-retrofit a Mazzer chute?

Postby alex e on Mon Nov 01, 2010 11:21 pm

Completely unrelated to my previous post, I'm looking for a very factory doserless mod. This thread was merged for some reason with a previous one. So I start anew....

Picked up a clean SJ yesterday for $300 locally and immediately removed the hopper, doser and PF holder, sliding it in next to the Gaggia Classic while the wife was out trick or treating. I gave it a cursory cleaning, adjusted the burrs down till the made contact and then backed off to about one mark left of 4. I measured out about 20g of beans on my scale and tossed them in with the tamper in the throat, catching the grinds in a metal sugar container......Well, tamp and load and 26 seconds later I had a DAMN GOOD cup. This coffee is wonderful. I'm stoked.

Yes I need a doserless mod and a grind collar adjustment pin. Hopefully a Mazzer chute for one of the doserless models would fit the SJ? Seems one of the chutes fit and will line up from what I've read?

My main goal is to actually get the bottom burr carrier out and degunk it, even though the machine is pretty darn clean, and was gone over by the seller.

If you want the OEM look, the page you linked says it all, including a link to the backing plate. As AJ suggested, there are ample DIY doserless modifications documented in the forum if you want to save some coin (e.g., aluminum doserless mod, 2-liter bottle doserless modification, doserless parts template).

I just moddod a super jolly to doserless after wondering about it for years.I'd tried a few home conversions, and never been happy with the results, so i ordered the Mazzer mini E chute and the backing plate.I've tried it with and without the static screen and prefer it with the screen in.I also left the portafilter fork on to rest the portafilter on while filling, i use my portafilters without spouts so it rests on the fork nicely. Its not cheap, especially getting the parts to New Zealand, but i'm very happy with it.

You dont have problems with clumping? Secondly, I would think the exit speed of the grind from the SJ would be too slow leading to it kind of being stuck at the static grid. Can you confirm or debunk this ?

I am thinking about doing the same thing, but the above makes me hesitate. I would really like to see a video though :-)

I have not yet tried the SJ OEM doserless mod without the anti-static screen but plan to next time I mod a grinder (I already sold the ones I converted.) There is *some* grounds that stay back up behind the screen but not that much more than when there is no screen. I was knocking out the grounds with a small soft long bristled brush (about 1/2" wide flat). The grid assembly does make the grounds come out less fluffy than when using a conventional doser but I had no distribution or shot problems, nor did I have an issues with static. Going doserless was a new experience for me but I now miss it and plan to convert a couple Majors. My guess is that the Majors will not require the anti-static screen.

On the Danish home barista forum, there are a few which have converted Majors from doser to doserless. They do report the need to the static grid. Otherwise they do experience problems.

There are some vidoes here

Thank god that chute will fit! I was worried. Not certain about the ant-stat screen's effectiveness. I guess you just brush the clumped grinds from the opening after grinding is done without one. I'm only grinding like 20g of beans and initially they fly out of the grinder, but then cling and ooze out like toothpaste. A lot of the grinds remain inside the machine's chute. I just tap a bit and brush out the clinging grounds. Keep in mind I have been experimenting with different doserless containers, so coffee is flying everywhere. I just vacuumed out the insides of SJ a minute ago. I'll be ordering that chute and backing plate today!

I bought the complete Mazzer SJ doserless kit from Owen ( Phaelon56 on H-B) for less then the cost of the funnel alone that I see in the links posted here. I would suggest contacting him for price/availability of the complete kit before spending the money on individual parts.

Pics of the new kit would be great and videos are even better!

I've used the funnel kit first on an SJ & then on a Major. The SJ loads up the chute with or without the grid but I definitely preferred the Major without the grid. The grid was designed as an anti clumping aid & I saw no difference in static with or without it. Either way I got static with the funnel but clumping was not an issue. Having owned dosered & doserless Majors at the same time I prefer the doser version with the standard mods.
