Service for a Rancilio Rocky

Postby dmg123 on Wed Dec 31, 2008 6:04 pm

Okay I feel like a bit of an idiot - my Rocky w/doser was in need of a good cleaning (often had to bang the side to dislodge beans stuck near the burrs). I followed (or apparently tried to follow) this tutorial:

http://coffeegeek.com/guides/cleanrocky

Now my Rocky is clean as a whistle, but doesn't work at all. I just can't get a fine grind from it any more and it sounds angry w/ me. The machine is 1 1/2 years old and was a gift, so warranty is done.

Any suggestions for where to get a Rocky serviced that won't charge a fortune? Or any friendly souls in the DC/Bethesda MD area who would be willing to help a novice out?

Wish I was technically proficient, but I am what I am...

Thanks so much,

David

Remove the upper collar again
clean very well the collar thread and the thread on the motor end
after it is completely clean
screw it down all the way until you see the lower burrs moving
back up 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn
reassemble the rest
give it a try

Have you tried confirming the true zero point? Maybe you attached the hopper incorrectly and the safety screw is preventing it from turning finer?

Thanks for the advice - I'll try cleaning the threads and see if that works but I'm skeptical, did a pretty thorough job. I removed the safety screw at someone else's suggestion.

I've also noticed a strange thing -- when the top burr is off and I turn on the machine, sometimes the motor seems to turn slow and then kick in faster after a few seconds. Is this normal?

Sorry -- I did also post this on coffeegeek.

OKay I did an even more thorough cleaning and am still getting a poor grind. But I did confirm what could be an bigger problem -- every 3rd or 4th time I turn on the grinder, the motor turns slowly and then after a few seconds seems to "catch" and go to full speed. This especially happens after the machine has been off for a minute or more.

Seems like I might need to send/take this somewhere for servicing. I don't know where it was bought as it was a gift 18 months ago.

Anyone have a suggestion for service areas in the Washington D.C. metro area, or best place to mail?

Thanks,

David
