Is that all that seasoning is? I figured that's at least part of it, but always assumed there was an element of honing/dulling the fresh edges of the blades a bit as well. If that's part of it, I could imagine rice might help do that part faster.
It makes me wonder if anybody's ever tried, say, rolled oats to clean out a grinder. It's much softer than rice and probably has a lot of the oil-removing properties. Plus you can use the oat grinds to make chocolate chip cookies with a hint of rancid coffee.
