Is that all that seasoning is? I figured that's at least part of it, but always assumed there was an element of honing/dulling the fresh edges of the blades a bit as well. If that's part of it, I could imagine rice might help do that part faster.

It makes me wonder if anybody's ever tried, say, rolled oats to clean out a grinder. It's much softer than rice and probably has a lot of the oil-removing properties. Plus you can use the oat grinds to make chocolate chip cookies with a hint of rancid coffee.

I have ran oats through the coffee grinder at the local grocery store:D

I used to do it as an additive for a post-workout protein shake as working out is one of my hobbies. The coffee grinder did a nice job of turning it into a flour like substance that mixed very easy with whey protein.

I kicked over a glass of red wine on my beige carpet. I ground a pint of rice through my Mahlkoenig bag grinder and sprinkled it on the stain. Vacuumed it up the next day and all was well.

When I was only using my hand grinder for espresso.. a while back.. I would put a couple tablespoons of whiterice in the "hopper", and grind it through by hand. MUCH harder then even a very light roast, for brewed coffee.

Once I got the Major.. and a month went by.. I grabbed the rice.. And stopped. I thought to myself it would probably be too hard for the burrs.. and since I just put brand new burrs in, I didn't want to find out. So, I just cleaned by hand.

Now, I use Grindz. Its a wonderful product, and does a very good job. Once a month, a capful goes in. Ive already used it a couple times on the Major, but not yet on the Vario. Vario is sometime next week for cleaning.

For seasoning the Major.. I just picked up 5lbs of whole bean coffee, cheapest the store had, and ran it through.. then cleaned it out real good, and then went on my merry way.

I used to be in the textile business, so of course I came across quite a few tricks for removing/preventing staining, but never that one. I'm almost tempted to spill some wine just to test it out :P
