Saeco Hercules: Is this a rebadged Mazzer?

Postby stevescapin on Wed May 13, 2009 4:24 pm

Saeco sells the grinder you see below under the name Hercules. The burrs are 83mm and it works on 220 volt. I don't think Saeco actually builds grinders themselves. Could this be a rebadged Mazzer? Something else?

Thanks!

Not a Mazzer rebadge.

Most likely of Chinese origin, as per...

Note the collar similarity.

The burr size on the Saeco is identical to the Mazzer Major (83mm), while the Heycafe burr size is different (64 mm). The collar is similar however...

A rebadged Fiorenzato. This makes sense.

Any insights on the quality of this grinder. A shop is closing down near my place and it is selling it. I am wondering whether I should bite.

All depends on the price. Any commercial espresso grinder in decent condition is a big step up for the typical home user if they are not already using a commercial grade grinder. Whether it's a good value for the asking price is a different question and the answer will depend on many factors.

For the record, I had a quick look at said grinder. To me, it appeared equivalent to a Mazzer Major. Stepless adjustment is the same, with the thick metal collar. The doser appeared to sweep marginally cleaner than the mazzer doser. Construction seems very good, very solid. Too bad it was already sold!
