Rocky Grinder Died - Help!

Postby gpsd on Thu Apr 23, 2009 10:24 pm

Though I have been considering replacing my 4 year old Rocky, I have yet to do so and the thing just stopped working tonight. It is a doserless model, and I gave it a tap on the side as the grinding was essentially done to knock out any lingering grounds (which I actually rarely do ), and the motor just stopped. No weird noise, no straining motor, no smoke, no signs of the end coming. When I push the button to grind there is absolute silence. It seems odd that this machine would die just like that. Any suggestions on reviving this grinder or whether anyone has had a similar experience where their Rocky was able to pull through.

Any help is desperately needed as I cannot replace the grinder until next week.

Thanks,
George

Did you unscrew the top burr carrier to see if anything is jammed?

Take off the top, unscrew three screws and lift off the top carrier.

Dislodge any stuck pieces

other things to check:

1. maybe it IS on? they are pretty quiet
2. Check to make sure the fuse on that outlet didnt blow

Nothing jammed or stuck - bottom carrier spins smooth as butter.

1. Not on, unfortunately
2. outlet is fine - and tested grinder on other outlets with same result.

I also opened the bottom to see if any accessible electrical contacts became loose - everything "looks" ok.

Thanks for the suggestions, though.

First guess:
- Soemthing stuck under a motor brush lifting it from the commutator
second:
- Start capacitor

do you have any electrical experience?

Try jumping the pulse switch to see if something is wrong with the switch (unlikely but possible)

Thanks for all the help. Aparently there was a loose connection in the grinder plug as wiggling the cord where it terminates at the plug brought the grinder back to life. Mystery solved.

in that case make sure to check to make sure the cord is still in good shape.. you don't want any shorts!
