Replace plastic lens from doser in Mazzer Super Jolly?

Postby Lilvito469 on Sat Dec 11, 2010 10:49 pm

Hello,

I bought a used Mazzer Super Jolly that was BEAT up. Probably worse than I have seen from most restore pics when I have been browsing around the forums. The plastic inside the doser is disgusting and brown from all the oil in the coffee as well as cracked. Scraping it really isn't getting it clean and I noticed some websites sell the replacement plastic portion of it. How do I get the one currently in the doser off, and how do I get the new one in? I am not finding much online using a Google search.

It slides out from above. Try washing it in the dishwasher and see how clean it gets.

How can this be? I have tried and it seems it is glued on and is not going anywhere fast.

Old coffee can get unbelievably sticky.

It's nearly impossible to remove it without breaking. I take them out to refurb grinders but the ones I remove are already cracked, so I just crack them some more and remove the broken pieces. Getting the new one in completely without breaking it can be very difficult. I use a thick dowel to tap in one edge at a time and push it downwards but if anyone has a better method I'd love to hear it. Sometimes I get it most of but not all the way down (but still usable and looks okay) and at least once I cracked the replacement lens.

I've had good luck removing/replacing the plastic inserts as long as the doser body isn't dented or tweaked. If you plan to fully disassemble & clean the doser why not just pull the doser off the grinder & drop the whole assy. in some hot Cafizia solution. This will remove the old oils/grounds & make breaking it down much easier.

Heat (soaking in hot water) may work to expand the metal just enough to make it easier to get the plastic in and out. The water will also act as a lube. Might even spray the plastic with cold water after soaking the assembly in the hot to contract it just a bit.

So just an update, you guys were correct. I soaked it in hot water, started to crack it a bit more while prying and suddenly it slid right out. Do you know if the doser replacement for the mini would work on the super jolly?

I asked a vendor carrying the mini lens, they said it wouldn't fit the SJ.

So what did you end up doing to replace it?
