Recommended Grind Setting for Mazzer Mini

Postby javacrazed on Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:57 am

Hello, question for the group. I have a mazzer mini grinder and would like to know from other Mazzer owners where approx. they set their grinder at from espressos? I know there are a lot of variables that go it to it, but just looking for the "ballpark" setting so I can validate if I am setting my mazzer correctly. Thanks.

[*]Decrease the grindsize while burrs are running,
[*]Continue until you hear the burrs touching (a quick ticking sound)
[*]Increase the grind size a small bit
[*]1. Make yourself an espresso with this grind setting
[*]2. If the espresso machine fails to produce any espresso, or takes too long for 60 ml in 30 seconds (or somewhere around that time);
[*]3. Increase the grind size a bit,
[*]4. Repeat step 1. and continue to 2, and 3. Until you get +-60ml, or +-2x30ml in +-30seconds

Every set of coffee beans will require a different grind size depending on freshness, origin, roast level, humidity and the position of the stars, but they will most likely be in the area you just found for yourself. So for every new type of bean you put in the grinder, you'll have to play a bit with grind settings until it's to your liking.

Good you asked!

[*]Decrease the grindsize while burrs are running,
[*]Continue until you hear the burrs touching (a quick ticking sound)
[*]Increase the grind size a small bit

Do this with an empty hopper, because else you wont be able to hear the burrs touching!

[*]1. Make yourself an espresso with this grind setting
[*]2. If the espresso machine fails to produce any espresso, or takes too long for 60 ml in 30 seconds (or somewhere around that time);
[*]3. Increase the grind size a bit

You can do these with a filled hopped!

It's normally about 1/8 to 1/4 turn from Zero.

If 0 is Zero, looks in the ballpark

There is no 'calibrated correctly'.

Burrs all vary slightly in thickness. Consider 1 revolution of the burr carrier moves the burrs about 1mm.
A 3.6° movement of the burr carrier [ 1/100th of a rotation or about 2s shot time ] moves the burrs vertically 1/100th of a mm or 4 tenths (0.0003937")

Assuming the change from Zero to grind is within about 1/4 turn, it's good.
