Problem adjusting timer of Mazzer Mini E

Postby fuzzypoodle on Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:02 pm

Hi,
First, I am brand new to espresso making.
I got an Andreja for Christmas and my passion for espresso making has begun. :D
Of course, the passion needed to be fulfilled with getting a grinder !
So, I researched far and wide and concluded that Mazzer Mini E Type A would
be it ! It feels now it was not a prudent decision. I wonder if this feeling is due my
ignorance or there is some substance to it .... so:

The machine arrived. I somehow assumed that out of the box it may be set up
(at least more or less) for the right grinds for an espresso and and the right amount. It was definitely not.
To fill up a single shot portafilter, I would have to use 3 presses of single shots on the Mazzer !

OK, so I started adjusting the timer. According the the manual, 180 degree turn yields approximately
1 g in coffee. Definitely NOT. So I kept turning, when finally got approximately 8g to dispense on single shot button.

The following morning, the single shot button was back to 3 g ! It dispensed consistently 3g after several
shots. From 8 to 3 ?! I keep wondering of something is stuck in the funnel ? Inspecting on the outside
at least it does not seem to be the case.

Also, the grounds seem to be very very clumpy. I knew this was the case with some of the Mini E's but was hoping it would not be mine ... :(

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The amount ground is very dependent on
  • How full is the hopper?
  • How fine is the grind?
  • How oily is the coffee?
So even if the timer is running the motor for the exact same duration, you'll see some variation in the amount of coffee that is ground unless all of the above are constant.

Can't offer any good advice on getting rid of the clumps. You can use WDT in the basket, or grind into a ramekin first if the clumps are causing problems with espresso shots. I have used both methods successfully with an E.

I have the same grinder. 4 years on with little to complain about. However, I have had the problem you describe. Like the previous poster--it's probably that you have the grind set too fine. Back it off alot & run some coffee through really coarse. If that doesn't clean things out: it's not hard to unscrew the adjustment ring all the way off and access the burr. I do a thorough cleaning about once a year.

Most easy way to dial in a Mini is to start in the middle of the calibration sticker. Use the grinder in manual mode. Use the double basket. Dose and level the coffee in the basket and make a double coffee. Adjust the grind in small steps and grind out half a shot after adjusting to get the new grind. Dose and level the same way and try again till you get the right extraction time.
If your grind is ok, than start adjusting the timers.
You should find the right grind within the calibration sticker area.

Also keep the hopper filled with enough coffee. You need some weight to push the beans down on the burrs.

I have an older Mini-- a manual and converted to doserless. If facing your problem, I'd remove the hopper for awhile and weigh each dose directly into the Mazzer throat. This would remove one variable, and help you get you closer to a grind that you like. After that, you can go to work on the timer to achieve the desired volume for your shot.
