Post a pic of your home-made hopper

Postby edwa on Mon Nov 23, 2009 12:18 pm

A post from another member got me thinking that there must be a gallery worth of home-made hoppers out there. So, why not share a photo of yours to perhaps guide and inspire future creations. The more information you give about what parts you used and how you made it the more helpful the thread will be.

Here's 2 of mine, the green hopper is made from cutting down a "Function" vitamin drink bottle and the top is to a small thermos. The Baja Bud hopper is from a local Mexican restaurant of the same name that has the big plastic soda cups and the top is from a Joe Glo cleaner container.

Ed, Here is the Hopper I made for the M7K, it stands 18" tall now to the lid. I made it with a "Camelbak Better Bottle 1L" and it comes in a very dark BPA-free plastic. At the taper to the neck I had to remove some material (like an 1/8") to slip into the throat of the Macap. I used a standard portable belt sander, just rotating the bottle at the edge of the sanding belt. The lid is one that was in the cupboard and is made by Rubbermaid with a number "6" presumably their sizing.ImageImage

Yes, exactly! And the doser lid off my super jolly fits it perfectly.

I settle for single-serve hopper made of the mundane and ubiquitous ABS coupler for 1.5" pipe. A little black electrical tape around the middle accommodates the taper in the throat of the Macap MC4.
Possibly of slightly more interest is the 145-gram plunger/deadweight, with the hollow bottom to accommodate the acorn nut on the burrs. It's made from two PVC fittings, joined by a 1/2" brass nipple (not visible), with a 1/2" brass plug for a handle. Each PVC fitting had a hex end, the corners of which were filed down slightly to make a cozy fit inside the ABS coupler, making two "bearing surfaces". The upper "bearing surface" is just below the top of the ABS hopper with an 18-gram dose, and is just starting to protrude with 20 grams. -Ed

Lot of different ones have come and gone. All cheap and easily obtained. These came to stay.

For anyone who wants to give it a go, I have several pieces of the clear acrylic in 2¼" [~57.2mm] and 2¾" [~70mm].
Screws, only M6x6
PM with address and I'll send. A donation to Coffee Kids would be nice

Ed, that is one stylish answer to bean column weight! Love it! Do the red and black dots mark off anything in particular? Now that its Christmas time I wonder if there's an ornament small enough to fit inside?
