I would be very interested to hear more about what in particular you didn't like in the dark roast.

It's a really nice small and well known speciality coffee shop, good baristas, pretty popular in Berlin and always full, it's called The Double Eye. Beans are not "the" best and more expensive, but they know their trade well and normally you'll get a very nice cup for a small price (about €1,80 a espresso and €2 a cappuccino.
For my short tasting experience, the Peak reminded me more of a good big conical grinder than the K30.
What I disliked from the darker blend ?
I believe it must have been the dark roasted Sumatra and probably some Indian robusta in the blend ... not my taste, and somewhat hard on my stomach.

The latest Cat and Cloud has an interview with Kyle Ramage of Mahlkönig USA and talks a lot about the Peak.

Makes me want the stupid grinder even more! That's the first I heard that it wasn't just an EK43 in a smaller body.

People have complained since forever that there was no progress in coffee grinder design. No more.

It will be interesting to see if Mahlkoenig's challenge provokes Mazzer to step up to the plate.

I don't know if Mazzer will 'respond'. As mentioned in the podcast, the vast majority of Mahlkönig sales are non-specialty. I think it's the same for Mazzer. And Italian companies (generalizing here) don't usually like to be told what to do.

I especially liked the discussion on the anticlump flapper, that they basically tested a _lot_ of different flapper designs, which indicates flapper design is really heuristically and tweaking it a lot of times until it's perfect. Which basically validates exactly how I ended up with my flapper.

---EDIT omg 1337th post! ---
Industry commentary from an enthusiast perspective based on conjecture, and a bit of self-congratulatory wank on equipment mods. Seems representative :D

Ugh, that podcast was hinting at an even better grinding coming out soon and possibly K30 reboot. Guess I have to wait

If you have watched "Ben Kaminsky: Espresso: Why you hate it, how to fix it" on YouTube, he says he visited Mazzer factory, and asked them if they could make the grinders more unimodal, and they replied something like "Sure! But we're not interested in that." Because that's not what the Italians want.

Well, apparently they didn't like it that much. I was at the downtown Heart location today and they had a K30 they used for single origins, Robur for Stereo blend, Kony for decaf, and EK43 for bulk grinding.

I asked them about the Peak and was told they tried one out at the Burnside location, but didn't like it as much as the K30 and have since switched back. Was not able to get more info than that, but it just goes to show that new and more expensive does not necessarily mean better.

I hope when the Peak comes out that HB will conduct some proper blinded testing to compare to the K30 and a few other grinders.
