New Mahlkonig K30 Upgraded Grind Chamber

Postby houdina on Tue Feb 09, 2010 4:38 pm

I just received the upgraded parts for the K30. Mahlkonig sells the whole unit including the motor and then you send back the old one and get a credit for it. Just three screws hold the motor grinder assembly in the body and after unclipping one electrical connection it just lifts right out. Here is a link to photos of the old and new parts side by side:

Dan suggested I upload the photos, I am not very good at resizing photos but here is the first, the new one is on the left

New one is on the right?

Looks like the metal flap on the new one is designed to break the clumps?

Sorry for not labeling them, the one on the left is the new one except for the photo with the top off. The new unit has those plastic petals to break up clumps on the way into the chute.

Thanks for clarification! So the last two pictures show the new unit and those petals?

Thanks for the pics Houdina. :)

How about the results? Is the grind coffee completely fluffy? How well those "petals" work? Could you post a picture of the grind coffee, please? Thanks!

For whoever is interested to know - I bought the upgrade kit (chamber only, $149 plus shipping) from Mahlkonig for my 2008 version K30 last week and installed it yesterday. In terms of the clumping, it's like day and night to me. No clumps at all and very fluffy. More important is that since there is no more clumps, there is no more grinds bounding from the big clumps in the portafilter to make mess on my counter top and floor. :D

Thanks for the info an pics - I have the older style and I see the flap is in the way compared to the newer version. I placed a strip of tape across the top of the flap (very thin) while I held it in the raised position and secured each end of the tape to the sides of the chute - now the flap is open like the newer version - it is an improvement with less clumps to break up - but to be honest the clumps weren't hard to break up before the tape mod.
