Need help removing the lower vane of Mazzer Super Jolly

Postby samuellaw178 on Fri May 06, 2011 12:39 pm

Hi,

I got my Super Jolly yesterday and the thwacker seems to be very stiff, I would have to hold the grinder while thwacking otherwise the grinder will move. Thus, I was trying to remove the lower vane of the doser in order to clean it.

Reference thread:
How To Remove Mazzer Lower Doser Vane WITHOUT BREAKING!

I searched for many threads and I've tried every tips I found. However, I still couldn't twist the bolt on the golden gear. I've removed the safety pins. So the only thing left is to twist the bolt. I am wondering, am I twisting the right way by turning my rachet counter clockwise? I am afraid that I am twisting it the wrong way and making it worse. Thanks!

The thread is normal - righty tighty, lefty loosey

Are you sure that center pin is out? Can you see through that hole?

If it is then you can remove it in the way in your link (just remember you are holding the big gear, not the vanes.. the vanes WILL break!

Alternatively if it is stuck on extremely hard you can try heating/freezing cycles to loosen it up

Thank you godlyone! It's really helpful to confirm that I am not twisting it the wrong way. Anyway, I am very sure I did take off the center pin. I used a small screwdriver and knocked on it with a hammer until a piece of metal came out. I did not hold on the vane as warned by the threads. I guess I will try your freezing and heating method. Thanks again! :)

Or try a tee-handle wrench or rent an ADJUSTABLE impact wrench. In any case, use a 6 point socket on that bolthead if available.

This is was one of the hardest parts on my super jolly deep clean(that and getting the lower burr carrier out). If I remember correctly I jammed something between the "golden gear" and the doser mouth opening, then using a ratchet wrench I locked onto the nut. The way that actually worked best for me was griping the doser itself and wedging the wrench against the ground(I seem to have had more torque that way). If you have the viewing window out, there is lots of places to get a good hold of the doser. Then twist the doser as hard as humanly possible and hopefully it will give.

I wasn't interested in possibly breaking the vanes when I redid my SJs & Majors so I left it in place. With everything else stripped off the doser shell I sat the whole thing in a bowl of hot Cafiza solution & let it soak till the water was cool. This loosened up any coffee oil & grounds packed under there and a good rinse with hot water flushed it out.
