My doserless Mazzer Major vs. Mahlkonig K30

Postby Juanjo on Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:29 pm

well,

don't know if is a fair comparison, since I didn't pull side by side shorts and the K30 is traveling to Cali tomorrow to its new owner..
but it can be a little referendum of how fast a Major can be when using doserless..
both seems to be able to fill a double basket in about 5 seconds.
I'm very proud of how my $100 including shipping Major turn out with this conversion..
here is a little sharing..

*thanks Ilya for the parts ;)

How is the retention on the Major? Looks VERY enticing

Look at it this way... You can move around you P/F and evenly distribute the grounds while grinding, while the "fast" guys have to do it after the grind session. I Know, not much of consolation but...

here is a shot, as you can see static is GONE..
I grounded the back plate and chute straight to the green cable from the plug.. looks like it works.

PS,
this was my first idea for a Major doserless, but it didn't work as I wanted to..still it was fun..:)

Love you, love your work, really I do, and maybe it's just because I'm a sound engineer, but you really need to turn off the TV and radio before you video these things!

Nice, but a couple of observations . . .

First, my Mahlkönig K30 Vario grinds a double in 3.3 seconds, but I suspect it's a lower dose than you're using.

Secondly, it appears to me that more coffee ended up in the basket of the Mahlkönig K30ES (and less in the tray), than with the Major. That is to say, the basket looks "fuller" from the Mahlkönig, and the tray looks like it caught more grinds on the Major.

As always, though, it's what's in the cup that counts, and I have no doubt a) the Major does a superb job, and b) at $100, qualifies as the "Bargain of the Century" !

Cheers,
Jason

hey Psyd, thanks for the love.. ;)

Jason,
in the first video, the Major wasn't grounded properly, check the second video and you'll see that all the coffee end-up in the basket.. :)

thanks

No sweat. Lemme know when you're ready to trade that awful work-horse of a lever for a semi auto two group that does all the work for you...

And it is possible that the $75 Rio Major of mine with new burrs, complete with doser, hopper, lids for both, is the deal of the century.
Put it on the counter next to my $100 Astoria Major that had seen less than a year of service, plugged it in, and haven't done anything but grind in it and clean it since.
