Motorize the Orphan Espresso Pharos Grinder?

Postby moreshots on Sun Dec 25, 2011 12:21 pm

I have been using my Orphan Espresso grinder and like it a lot more than the Mazzer mini I have but !!!!

there is the 21 gram hold back issue of the hopper.
I am looking at making a hopper that can be removed with a drive motor on top or a gear reduction motor to power the grinder?

Has anyone tried this ?

a couple of things
1. the 68 mm burr set requires a pretty good amount of torque so considering a reduction drive motor
2. Second an extension shaft for the current thread should not be an problem.
3. How to make it look good?? stainless enclosure?

just some thoughts? let me know if you have already done this.

Thanks Bill

As far as a "hopper" is concerned, I have replaced my bean ring with one of OE's espresso dosing funnels. If I recall correctly, I bought the 53-54mm and it fits well. I am using a lid from a can of Pringle's which also fits perfectly. I adds a good bit of capacity, but I am not sure what the capacity of the lower funnel is?

Hmm, if you are considering the motorized route, why not try to save up a little more and get a 68mm conical electric grinder? Let the Pharos be your back-up/secondary grinder if you will. To zombify the Pharos with motors and enclosure etc etc, it seems like a tough road to take. :? I find that grinding espresso on the Pharos is a pleasure; so I am kinda against motorizing it, at least not permanently. But as usual, YMMV. :P

Hi, I did it, see here. :)

Short version:
- I used a window wiper motor. 6A is enough to drive it for 12V
- Most stable design uses two L brackets.

Haven't had time to work on a nicer version.

Thanks I will be using a gear motor at approx 200 to 300 rpm, also will make it removable for a quick change over . I love the Grinder as it is just would like the option to make or grind more in a shorter time
Bill

P.S nice project!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. My goal was quiet and cheap - I figure a 300rpm motor will be loud, and I'm not sure where to source one for minimal $. I have four windshield wiper motors on hand, so they do the trick. The motor does have a whine, but it's totally drowned out by the bean grinding noise.

When I get better skills, the goal will be to use a variation of the first with a hinged top to allow for removing the motor. And make it somewhat more professional looking of course :) Please share when you make progress!

Well the first reason I can think of is that those burrs are from a Mazzer Robur. So to get the motorized version you would need to save up $2,800.

Hmm, when I was posting that, I was thinking more in the line of Compak K10 (~$1.3k). People had been able to get the rebadged version, Wega 6.8 for slightly cheaper than 1k if I remembered correctly(but this was a past deal). But yeah, motorizing the Pharos could be done, just not for my taste. :P

I want to motorise the Pharos too. However, one problem is how to deal with grinds retention in the exit funnel. As things are now, we bang it on the bench or shake it to get all/most of the grinds out. Unless another design for the exit funnel is coming up, this still needs to be done. I would like to not do that with the motor unit on. So, some kind of quick coupling would be great.
One easy solution would be to just use an electric screwdriver, but I fancy the windshield wiper motor idea. A C-shaped mount perhaps, motor on top, where you could just pull the grinder out and shake/bang, then push it in place again?
