Hey, Matt. The conventional wisdom is that big flats are somewhat preferred for more lightly-roasted beans, while big conicals are preferred for darker roasts. I suspect that with well-dialed-in Monoliths, the differences in flavor and mouthfeel between the flat and conical grinders with any given bean will be -- at most -- quite subtle for the majority of coffee drinkers. YMMV if you're blessed with a golden palate, though.mathof wrote:How do you determine which type of grinder to use with any particular beans? I guess you could dial-in new beans on both to see which you like better, but after a while you might begin to notice that cerain origins, roast levels, etc indicate that one type of burr would be more suitable than the other for certain types of beans.

That's what I do literally, I try bean on each of them and then continue using whatever tastes better. I have not done this long enough to be able to spot what works better where... And the reality is sometimes it's a minute difference where neither is necessarily better just slightly different.

How long does one typically have to wait to get their hands on one of the Monolith Conicals? It looks like they are no longer taking pre-orders for the current batch, so how long before they likely start the next production run?

Current eta for folks who ordered from the 2nd production run is sometime in December. There will presumably be a 3rd but likely not until 2nd is done with. You can email directly through a link on their website for an answer straight from the horses mouth.

While on the topic of time (how long the wait till the next batch arriving and new orders being taken) could someone tell me how long does a double shot take to grind in the conical (say 18 grams). Forgive me if this has been laboriously discussed in one of the threads, but if so, I've missed it. In fact, how big is the motor? (eg my current Mazzer mini-E has a 250 motor which seems pretty small by today's premium grinder standards which, in conjunction with its burr design, makes it rather slow).

Does anyone mind sharing a video of your settled workflow after getting familiar with the grinder? Much appreciated!

For those who are interested, I heard back from KafaTek and the next production run of conicals is targeted for January, with delivery in February/March. Pre-orders will open at the end of December or early January.

There is a video on the Kafatek site, where you can see for yourself:'chopinhauer wrote:While on the topic of time (how long the wait till the next batch arriving and new orders being taken) could someone tell me how long does a double shot take to grind in the conical (say 18 grams). Yes, I've seen it, and still ask my question. I'm not interested in all the preparation routine displayed there, which I find, with respect, idiosyncratic and distracting. I just want to know how long a double takes to grind. Surely, someone who has the grinder can answer that without saying 'go see the video'. For one thing, a single video is hardly a fair sample size.
I guess I could just ask Denis, and probably will if this route proves unenlightening.
