Modding the Mazzer 2 - Page 2

Postby craigcharity on Mon Sep 12, 2011 1:06 am

I had to mill the sides parallel because they had a slight taper. The original vanes also tapered a bit.

I have 2 majors and the one plastic mold doesn't fit in the other one so I don't know how it would work as a production thing. I will ask my friend if I can have the drawing of the new dosed vane in a couple of formats and you can take it to a local machine shop with a multi axis cnc machine.

You would have to get the bottom flush and i stuck some vinyl on the bottom of the centre piece of the vanes to raise the vanes a tiny bit, they created a loud harmonic scrape when they turned but it's gone now thanks to the slight space there now.

Thanks for the compliments, it has made me love major again :)

I have added the delta timer now, now I just have to figure out how to mount it.

What, other than style, does this mod offer over the more conventional tapemod?
The grinder looks great in that color though.

Hi Bluecold

The new dosing vane doesn't let any grinds sit on the top of it , apart from that I guess it is similar. I never had mush luck with the taped mod, it still left more grinds than I found acceptable.

The plastic funnel is an absolute gem, it really helps.

Hi Craig,

I agree, great work on the mod. I have a question if you don't mind,

Did you make the vane to fit after you machined the doser ? Or did you machine the doser to fit the vane ?

The reason I ask is because of the inconsistencies in the Mazzer castings, like you ran into with the plastic funnel not being able to work in another Mazzer grinder. Please post more pics of your mod, as I am in the process of rebuilding my Mazzer SJ.

I noticed before hand that the inside sides of the doser tapered in slightly, for molding purposes i guess. So Billy and I designed the vane after deciding that the doser would be milled.

I wanted it to be as close to the bottom and sides as possible so it would sweep cleanly. The height didn't bother me much because I only wanted small amounts to go though the bottom funnel at a time so as not to clog it.

I will post some more pics soon.

I have added the delta timer now and put a LED strip in the top inside of the doser to give it a little illumination, too much, maybe:) It also shines down on the portafilter when it is resting on the fork which looks pretty cool.

I have two majors, so I could send you the one doser, and when it returns, send you the second for this mod!
Just let me know when you plan to start production... ; >
It looks like exactly what my tape and Easter egg mod is not. Slick and sexy (and, you know, it works really well...)

Yeah Craig,

I think you and your friend are on to something here. I'd definitely be interested in this if you guys decide to either service the doser, or make the vane available with instructions. At the least you could make the drawings and specs available. I'd also think about a patent.

Nice work Craig, these are impressive!
Are you able to post or email the drawings for this lower vane? I would like to make something similar.
thanks

Hey guys, I am glad to see this mod is sparking some revived creativity , there is a great thread Modding the Mazzer 2.5 ( Modding the Mazzer 2.5 ) where Jean-Paul does a very similar mod.

Just wanted to show you the final(maybe:) product. Here is the Major sitting next to my friends Kony, I am using these for the next Barista comp which is this weekend.

What I have done now is added a LED strip to the inside of the dosing chamber which gives a great view of thats happening inside there, a strip of Blue LED to go under the grinder( It looks better in real life) It gives it a kind of hue from under the grinder.

I have also rubberized the portafilter fork to stop it clanging and scratching my portafilters.

The timer is mounted in a wooden box with duct-tape for now, until I can get someting nice made for it.

I will ask my friend for the drawing on the lower vane and post it soon.

Cheerio for now.

Hi Craig,

The lights add a whole other dimension to your grinder, "GREAT JOB" !!!!!!
I too would also be interested in the drawings for your Doser Vane, I have access to a machine shop for the lathe work and don't mind finding a shop with a double axis CNC machine. ( If your friend wants to make me one, I have no problem paying him for it and the shipping ) As far as the tolerances on the lathe work, how tight did you keep them ? From the bottom of the vane to the floor of the doser ? And from the sides of the vane to the wall of the doser ? Also, did you use a new bolt for the vane ? Or cut the original ? Either way, how long was the final piece ? But again great work on the mods ! Hey a suggestion for the timer mounting, maybe you can try and put it in the doser cover ( like the Mazzer E grinders ), the control panel of the timer would sit above the cover, and you can custom make a cone to house the timer on the under side so the grinds won't collect there. As far as the wiring you can do what Mazzer did, or drill through the housing to keep it contained inside the doser. A couple of other things I'm planning as I do mine is, polishing the exit chute with a cone and small flapper wheel. I know there isn't a lot of material there but I'm going to try to kind of "port match" the exit chute to the doser housing to help keep grinds from collecting there. The other is the plastic window on the doser, I plan on using a chamfering cone to angle the top edge of the window, and a small grinder to get around the cutouts, and then finish by polishing it with my headlight polishing kit, not giving the grinds a anywhere to get caught.
But I have to say it one more time "GREAT JOB" !
