Mazzer Telescopic Tamper

Postby yokomist on Tue Apr 12, 2011 6:45 pm

Does anyone have a mazzer with a telescopic or spring tamper attached to their doser?

I would like to know how they perform and if they are worth having. Also can anybody confirm that a standard tamper base will screw onto the shaft? The one I have coming is 57mm and I have a La Spaziale machine (53mm).

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips!

I have one. It's sitting in a drawer along with my doser, which has been removed. I never found it to be of much use, preferring instead to tamp using my own, more form-fitted devices. It's hard to do a nutating tamp on those things, anyway :D. Regarding tamper bases, I thought that each manufacturer has their own thread/piston configuration (i.e. espro, cafelat, reg barber, etc.) and that there was no single standard.

Thanks for the reply Sherman.

Where did you purchase your telescopic tamper? Do you know of a source where I can buy a 53mm base?

It will be interesting to see how it works!

Like Sherman, I prefer a detached tamper. But Espressoparts says the OEM Mazzer Grinder Mounted Spring Loaded Espresso Tamper comes with a 53mm piston, so there's a good chance they stock them. Give them a call.

It should be an easy matter to either have a base made or turn that one down. The radius would be -2mm and that should be a fairly easy matter. You could make one. The threads only have to be close since the force is compression and not tension when tamping.
