Mazzer Mini Design Thoughts - Page 2

i like to make my schnozzola out of a yogurt cup. glue it with some super glue. will last and last but will need to be cleaned out because very fine coffee dust will build up and back up the schnozz.

the sweeper mods i had but have removed them because they wear out and such. you can get by with just one sweeper on one of the vanes.

get your self a gralab 505 or a time-o-light if you want to be analog and set it up on the grinder to time the amount of grinds.

mini - ~18-20 seconds for a double... roughly 1 gram per second.
kony - 8-10 seconds for a double. varies on beans age and type.
major - 4-5 seconds for a double. also varies a bit.

with the gralab you can adjust in .1 second intervals. the time-o-lite is less exact but works just as well. its a really nice way to control the waste.

cheers.

Sad but I know nothing about dosers when I choose the Mazzer over the Vario...

I am just trying to point out to others what I think is the down side and the head in the sand design staff of Mazzer..

I don't know that their sales stats are but I'll guess the Mini is not for the commercial user and to add a commercial feature (doser) on to a Home Pro model is not great engineering...

My perfect model would have the doser as the bean hopper and dose the beans..
Add a chute to fill basket and a bigger exit port from burrs to not hang and grounds in there...

Am I happy with the Mini grinder?? Yes Sir
$375 for a grinder that sells for $560 all over, plus a $28 worth of Illy coffee and a $5.00 Illy spoon and free shipping, total with tax was $401

Am I sad I did not buy the Vario?? No
I think these will out live it with all the electronics on the Vario

I just wish the Mini was better set up for a Home Pro User not for a Commercial User

All Mazzer grinders are intended SOLELY for commercial use, and so the only "head in the sand" at Mazzer engineering is that they have never made any grinder intended for home use.

I would guess that the Mazzer engineers never imagined that any shop would use a Mazzer grinder with a Breville (or other) pressurized portafilter, and so the Mazzer PF forks are designed for commercial portafilters....and I might note that these work very well for almost all commercial PF's.

If you have done the sweeper vanes "electrical tape" mod and added a little schnozz to your Mazzer and grind only for each shot clearing the chute with a brush, that should address most of your concerns pretty effectively...and you can remove the PF fork if it's in your way.

It's commonly recognized that these are the small things we do in order to adapt a commercial device for home use. Considering that these grinders were never intended for use in the home, it seems like a small price to pay for such great grind quality coupled with over-the-top robust build quality.

I don't think so. The only difference between the Mazzer doser for the smallest (Mini) and largest (Robur) grinder is the height of the cylinder. All the Mazzers I've unboxed for the last few years included this disclaimer:

It's possible the warning may be at the advice of their lawyers, but the equally likely explanation is the grinder was designed for small cafes, cafes offering multiple coffees, or as a secondary decaf grinder, not the home market. For that matter, Mazzer didn't introduce the shorter kitchen-friendlier hopper until well after Macap did.

Thats the point I am trying to make, they are not thinking forward they are on their Laurals ...

While I am sure the Mini is used in cafe's at the most I would only use it for a De-Cafe grinder if I opened a shop..

I think its the No1 Home Pro User made but can be improved for the Home Pro...

Right now there is a debate Vario or Mini, Mazzer can turn that debate to Mini all the way and if they dont do anything some day it maybe Vario or Brand X or Z to buy..

If you all could buy a Mini for $150 less with No Doser and Super Mini Hopper what would you buy?
The standard Mini for $560 or Home Pro for $410

DOSER MESS.....You might find if you use the doser the way it was intended there would be no mess left behind and little left in the doser itself. With each segment being adjustable to +/- 0.1 gram adjust to say 8.0 grams per shot - grind 2 segments with doser lid under chute to catch left over and place left over back into doser filling only 2 segments with remaining 4 empty, bring back the lever and let it go - hard - twice - you now have (+/- 0.1 gram) 16.0 grams in your filter basket ... no mess.. perfect extraction ... every time
