Mazzer Major vs Super Jolly grind time trivia - Page 2

I've heard that some Mazzer burr sets go through a final deburring of the cutting edges and some do not. Others may have more info on this. I've heard they do cost a bit more might help with the break-in period and provide more consistency. I'm quite content with my Majors, one is a 01 (older style body) now doserless the other is a 07 newer style with the stainless grounds tray. Until the "perfect" grinder is produced I will stick with the Majors. I like the extra weight of them, simple styling, sound pitch when grinding(no whining), and super durability. I've kept my eye open for that super deal on a used Robur but wonder if I'd end up selling it for it's resale value and end up using the Major.

I have two Majors, and one tray that fits the old SJ feet. I've contemplated drilling and tapping new feet locations to make it fit under one (or the other, or both) of the Majors, but, 'new stainless trays', eh? 'Stash', eh? Hmmmm....

I'm using the large round grounds tray with the SJ cut outs under my Major. The only difference is the Major feet sit on the tray so you would have to lift the front of the Major to remove it. It does a much better job of catching the grounds then the smaller late style tray.

I haven't timed my SJs & Major but I do know the Major does a much better job of keeping the chute clear. By the time I'm done grinding 16g of beans in the SJ the chute is packed. The Major just blows the grounds through into the doser & leaves very little behind in the chute to brush out. Also the Major doesn't have that "shelf" in the burr throat where beans & bean chips hang up on the SJ. Its pretty much a straight shot right into the burrs so no brush work needed there.

I've noticed the same thing. A nice consequence is less clumping.

I got a super deal on a (used) Major after purchasing a (used) Robur. Both are great espresso grinders. It's hard to beat the large conicals for ease of use (large sweet spot for grind setting, visually beautiful pours). But to my taste buds, the taste profile of the Major is every bit as good.
