Mazzer Major modifications: doserless, on/off switch

Postby mwills on Sat Nov 07, 2009 3:39 am

All -

I've read through almost all the 'mod' and 'conversion' posts I could find on the topic. Most seemed a bit dated and I was curious if there have been any 'revelations' in the past year or so.

If not, I'm fairly convinced that making my 'Major' more or less a bigger version of the 'Mini-E ModB' is my best option.

Here is my current machine:

And I would like it transformed to this:

Going down this route - the easy/cheapest step has been taken:
    1) Hopper has been replaced with Mini hopper

Here is what is left:
    1) Replace 'timer' switch with 'toggle' switch. I think these can be sourced from Espresso Parts NW...
    2) Doserless conversion... This could be 'easy' but I don't really want to pay $180 for the Mini/Robur doserless chute. Has anyone found a source for steel funnels with a 120mm diameter? Other options that look presentable?
    3) the 'relay' switch that is activated by the portafilter. I like this solution the best for doserless grinders. Is this possible to source from Mazzer for less than say $50? If not, does anyone have a suggestion for such switch on the aftermarket?

Other input???

1/ The stock switch can be easily turned into a simple off/on switch by removing the two doser switch leads from the wiring block & adding jumpers between the two connection points of each lead.

2/ Email Owen @ Phaelon Coffee for a price on the conversion kit.

3/ Why not just run the grinder through an photo enlargement timer?

Brilliant! In which case you can do a dose at a time and keep the doser as a very handy little destatic/declumper and save yourself a fortune - bit like a Super Caimano....

Small point; the 'timer' version has a spring loaded wind-up type of switch that stays open for as long as you dial the timer back, and the 'auto' version has the switch that has two micro-switches that it controls (or control it, as you prefer) in that it will start every two rotations of the doser, and stop when the doser gets full, automatically.
IIRC, the 'timer' version does not have those two micro-switches located in the doser.

I'm aware of that as I have the timer switches on my SJs. I didn't mention it as the photo the O/P posted of his Major clearly shows the off/on/start switch.

Yeahbut, those photos came from EPNW, and the OP also clearly wrote;

I didn't know which way he was going with that, so I wrote the difference between the two so the OP could figure out what he really has and deal with it accordingly.

I'm just sayin' is all...

I also own a Mazzer Major doser model
Have made several mods already e.g. sweeper mod, chute mod

Next step is in my sights a doserless conversion
I intend to make my own funnel in the future probably in copper as my Mazzer is the gunmetal colour
