Mazzer Major is Awesome

Postby Ben Z. on Sun Jan 10, 2010 4:36 pm

So, I'd been using the Major more or less as a doserless since I got it and generally needed to do some minor distribution, but no WDT and got decent shots most of the time, but it made some mess on the counter.

I recently decided to put the doser back together (with schnozz and some sweeping mods) and it's been really interesting. Grind for 5 or 6 seconds, work the doser lever while moving the portafilter, distribute, tamp, really good shots.

Today I made 5 doubles with absolutely no post-dosing distribution besides a standard tamp. All 5 were some of the most perfectly evenly extracted shots I've done. Beading started evenly across the basket and the first signs of blonding happened at the same time across the basket. One shot tasted sublime and the other 4 were just as good as I had been getting while still distributing ~stockfleths.

Summary: Slightly modded doser = clean, easy, great shots. Or: My prior distribution technique really sucked.

Was this with the hopper loaded up so the grind chamber was always full of beans?

Yeah, at least a few shots worth.

Ah, okay. I have also just changed from a Super Jolly to a Major. So far I have been single dosing, and I am looking at what can be done to emulate a charged hopper of beans without loading up a hopper.

Certainly the taste is different between the 2 Mazzers. I think the taste is clearer with the Major; certainly it is quick to grind and has less static.

The first mod I made on my Mazzer Major was the sweeper mod

I have also made a doser chute mod for even distribution

My favorite is still the 2L bottle mod. I run with the hopper like it was made on the top side.

I still have the timer in the works, but I have found a couple of things to add to it, so it is not final yet.

Can you describe how you made that chute for your Major doser?

How to Tame a Messy Mazzer Doser <- A great link with instructions to make your own Schnozolla.

For a more permanent solution, you could buy the Elvinator from espressoparts.com http://www.espressoparts.com/ELVINATOR_V1

I love the shnozz! Thanks for creating and sharing it!
The front of my SJ doser has two screws - one longer than the other for some reason.
The shorter one does not protrude into the doser but the other does. Is that normal?
There is a third screw on the side that is longer. Does the SJ usually have two long screws in the doser?
Do the screws interfere with the installation or operation of the shnozz?

The screws on the front of the doser are used to attach a plastic tamper disc assembly that most North American users remove and have no use for. If you buy a used Mazzer it typically has the two screws left in those holes to cover them. If these screws are in place they should not impact operation of the doser assembly.
