I'm using a piece of 2.25 inch OD acrylic pipe or tubing -

I sits about about 3 inches out of the collar - I'm just holding it in with the screw that holds the mazzer bin in place.

I was given the piece of acrylic - so just kind of made it work. I wanted something taller, this is working out better than something taller would have.

A tamper was too heavy, according to my calculations. Turns out that an empty pill bottle, with a few quarters in it bringing the total weight of pill bottle with the quarters inside to 80 grams is equivalent to a large hopper filled halfway up ( after taking into consideration the five doubles in the pipeline - which includes the chamber).

Why it is working so well for me is I can easily track and keep up with how many doubles are in the pipe.

there are two doubles below the collar and three above. I just pick the pill bottle up and fill the tube each shot.

So, I take what I think will be tomorrow's shots out of the freezer and they should be correctly aged.

If you can see the thin gray lines - they are simply made from adhesive labels cut thinly and placed a double apart.

I can judge very closely how much to grind visually by simply eyeballing how close I am to the top line when I start and shut the grinder off when I get equally close to the bottom line - have to anticipate slightly because there's a slight delay while the burrs spin. I'm getting pretty good at it :)

In the pic, the acrylic is clear and the prescription bottle is somewhat orange looking

Hi PKR
I made one of those plastic ones first but it did not work for me

So I redesigned it and fitted it's replacement in 30 minutes
I used a flexible 1/3 of a millimetre aluminium foil sheet
This is easily cut with scissors but strong when held in place

For the doser you need to shape the foil to the hole shape and also make sure the shape allows it to fit back into place (see pics below)

That small right angle bend section can be done with pliers or on a vice if you have one (this bend gives it strength & do it while the foil is flat)

When you replace the grinder mechanism base the bend will also act as an anchor. When the base is tight the funnel will be held in place tight

I drew the funnel shape with a marker on the bent section and cut it with scissors
I cut it twice for clearance as the first time the end of the spout would just touch the grinds mound

You can see the shape & size on the photos

Good luck

Or, of course.. Just DL the PDF file for the Schnozzola, ala Andy Schecter. A donation to CoffeeKids was requested at the time of writing, and for how well it works, I thought it fair.

Print it out on a stiff paper.. I used high gloss photo paper, which was not only heavy enough, but the gloss kept the grounds from building up.

Takes roughly 2 minutes to install, taking your time.(tip, its not required that you remove the doser from the grinder...)

I pulled my 06 SJ out of storage recently for decaf duty. Printed out Andy's PDF, cut one out, traced it on a plastic milk jug & cut out a nice, durable plastic Schectermatic. I needed to trim a little off the end to get it to fit far enough down in the exit hole due to the thicker material & duct tape I used on the outside to hold it together.

I used the sticky back velcro on the upper & lower sweeper. Much easier to install then the tape mod as there is no need to remove the bottom vane assy from the doser. I also covered the face of the handle return stop with velcro to deaden the thwacking noise.

a schertermatic made from a yogurt container and glued with super glue is what i prefer. i have 2, one on a mazzer major and one on a mazzer kony, that have been in use for over one year with no ill effects. i have a paper on that has been in use longer that is mangled but still working great on the mazzer mini.

SwingT - Where did you get your acrylic pipe? I have been looking for something similar but have been unsucessful.

I agree that the Major is an awesome grinder! I have been using my refurbished one for a few weeks now and it is amazing the difference from the Rocky that I was using. Thanks JmanEspresso! It has been a wonderful addition. It is so fast and fluffy. It actually makes the espresso taste like the roaster's description, which is great.

went thru the Yellow Pages of the Phone book.

A local fabricator had the piece left over and just gave it to me for no charge.

Generally, if the vendor doesn't have it on hand, the minmum you can order is six feet, for somewhere around forty bucks for the six foot piece.

Shouldn't be any problem to cut it with a miter saw or similar

Thanks SwingT! I will see what I can find. I got a tip from a hardware store that a local milking facility might have what I am looking for. When I got there I looked in the "no longer used" section and I found a six inch piece that was close, but when I got it home it was a little too narrow. I am working on fitting a "spacer" to keep the tube in place. I am not too confident that it will work well, but it was free and it might just go into the recycling bin. I can always just use the enormous hopper.
