Mazzer Luigi not grinding coffee

Postby philo on Tue Mar 22, 2011 9:57 pm

I've had my Mazzer for 7? years or so. I've never changed the burrs. It doesn't seem that I've used it enough to have to do this. The issue I am having is when I put the beans in my grinder they just pop around and it doesn't grind them. I have no clue what to do. It just started happening one day. I'd take it in but there doesn't seem to be anyone advertising on the web that services these things in Chicago? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

1) With seven years of use it is certain to need replacement burrs. The "Luigi" name is on a few different models. You'll need to determine if it is the Super Jolly or the Major. New Mazzer burrs should run about $45 to $50 including shipping and you are sure to see a big improvement in your espresso compared to how it was before the current symptom.

2) There should be a link here somewhere (use Google or the forums search function) on how to change the burrs. It's easy to do and requires only a screwdriver, a few cleaning supplies and patience.

3) It sounds to me like your current issue is that the grinder somehow got set to being too coarse or too fine. Remove all beans, let it run and gradually turn towards "Finer" until you hear the burrs start to make a metallic rubbing sound when the flat edges rub together. Now back it off towards "Coarser" by about three to four of the small indentation on the adjustment collar and try running a few beans through.

Replacing the burrs isn't difficult. See Mazzer Super Jolly burr replacement. When in doubt, see Mazzer reassembly problem after burr replacement for the only tricky part.

Although the burrs are probably worn, "beans won't grind" can also be caused by very oily beans coating the burrs with tar. Search on "cleaning mazzer grinder" for instructions.
