Mazzer burrs... What are they made from?

Postby JmanEspresso on Sat May 16, 2009 7:49 pm

Hey, I did a search, not extensive but I did look around for a little while and couldnt find what I was looking for.. However, its possible, very possible I missed the answer, so please excuse me if i did.. It just seems like the answer I want is somewhere easily found...

What are the burrs made from? Stainless Steel? Are they Carbide Burrs?(I dont think so) Im kinda stumped... I couldnt really make a smart hypothesis by looking at/holding them, and was very curious as to what they are made of.. Anyone know?

Thanks

Definitely not stainless. And I'm almost 100% sure they are not tungsten carbide. I'm guessing that they are just a garden variety high carbon steel.

Certainly not stainless or carbide, I think they are most likely hardened alloy steel.

From http://www.wholelattelove.com/art...inderspotlight.cfm:

To build Mazzer burrs, not just any steel will do. Instead of the softer case hardened steel found in most other grinders, Mazzer constructs theirs from tempered ball bearing steel for the utmost in strength and longevity.

Tempered Ball Bearing Steel. Sounds good to me.

The question came up when I mentioned to my Father that roughly every 500 pounds, Burrs should be changed. Just as a rough number to throw out there, Id base it more on a suffering grind, or having to go finer and finer. But, He asked me "Arent they Carbide Burrs? They should last a long time no?".

I was almost positive they werent carbide, which then made me realize, I had no clue. Also reminded me that I wont need to be changing burrs anytime soon :)

Thanks everyone

Im not sure as to the exact type of steel used in the mazzer burrs but I do know they are made from a special swedish hardened steel.
