Mahlkonig Vario grinding too coarse?

Postby Londonplug on Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:39 pm

i a novice would be grateful of a little advice
My Mahlkonig vario is now grinding too coarse even on the lowest setting i am just about scraping a reasonable shot by part filling and tamping the portafilter two or three times with one final full strength push and polish and the shot takes 15 to 20 seconds to pass through, has something happened to the grinder are the burrs worn? how would i be able to tell? would an upgrade to a K30 give me finer grind ability? i generally use Cafe Nero house blend beans and usually with these beans my settings are to the finest on the macro scale and about half way on the micro scale another type of beans i tried just poured right through like a tap it is about 2 yrs old now with quite low use just a couple of shots a day and many days missed

Many thanks

The grind fineness can be adjusted.

The method described in the beginning of this thread is still possible but is not the way to go with the latest Vario (for a least a year now, not sure if it is applicable to yours); it might shift the calibration way too much inadvertently.

You should have with your grinder an hexagonal key ending with a strange looking metal blurb. It fits into a small hole located near the chute.

Your manual may not be up to date (mine wasn't) to describe the calibration procedure. You can find the latest version of the manual here on Baratza website (PDF) (the maker of the Baratza Vario / Malkönig Vario Home). See page 8 for calibration.

Thanks for that, will check which model mine is and have a go later. Still can't understand why it suddenly went out of adjustment.

wow that seemed a bit too easy the hardest thing was finding the second screw, it was under a grinder coloured sticker one quarter of a turn and the motor laboured slightly as described can't wait until tomorrow or saturday to try it out

Many thanks for advice the adjustments worked just fine very simple to do. A bit disappointed as i was half looking for a good excuse to spin the need to "Her indoors" that we could do with a k30 for espresso grinding. would that be a good move? if so has anybody got any good advice on how to persuade a wife that she needs it??
