Slightly OT: Why would you spend thousands of dollars on coffee equipment, but take pre-ground beans to work instead of buying a $40 hand grinder?

Because the quality of the drip, when compared to ground on demand, is something from slightly worse to slightly better (assuming you don't keep grounds overnight). See Rao's book for more.

Plus I don't have time to use that hand grinder.

I've been able to spend some time with Gary Horne this weekend and can report that, after running the NSF and UL gauntlets, the new version of the ProM is a signicantly different machine internally, with a new motor and burr set. Gary will release more details publicly, when they go into production, probably later this autumn. Non-U.S. models will have the same changes.

Thanks for the info! It's a shame that burrs are still not accessible in the improved model. If they were, I would order one right now, whatever the price...

Marshall, thank you for this news. This certainly sounds promising- I will delay my grinder upgrade until I hear more. Any ideas when and through what channels we might hear more details?

Thanks, Mads

What is the use of recalibrating the Mahlkonig Prom..?

At the end of march 2011 there will be a new mahlkonig prom especially for espresso with a 700 grams container.

At least mine did not grind fine enough for my espresso use. Recalibration solved that.

I've been using a ProM and it's fantastic. A little overpriced but a great grinder.

Probably only the hopper is the difference in the espresso version? It was advertised an optional 500g hopper when ProM was launched. A shutoff at the hopper would be great for bean changing. But at home I'm normally grinding by dose...

Great news to hear about March 2011!
I am eagerly awaiting the new version to replace my Mazzer Mini E (Type B). The Mazzer unevenly disperses the grinds towards the backside of my 54mm baskets, so I always have to redisperse.

I strongly count on the new ProM!
