Macap grinder stuck - burrs won't move

Postby Tasjiri on Fri Aug 08, 2008 1:49 pm

Hi all,

I always hoped my first post would be a good one. Never expected it to sound this silly. Still that doesn't change the fact that I did something stupid. I received my brand new stepless, doserless Macap MC4 today. And within the hour, without ever putting in any beans, and without turning it on, I managed to lock the top burr.

I just turned the adjustment knob toward what I thought was a coarser setting, however I misread the direction and ended up turning it too tight. When I noticed this (the knob was getting a bit heavier to turn) I tried turning it back the other way but I could not get it to move very far. Within a short while it would not move at all any more.

I've tried removing the black disc with the numbers on it, and turning it with a screwdriver in one of the holes meant to lock the bean hopper. But all to no good.

If any one has any advice apart from RTFM, (because I actually did that) and not letting pregnant women near electrical appliances (because that's what my husband will do from now on) it will be more then welcome.

Thanks, Tasjiri

The upper carrier turns CLOCKWISE to remove.

Assuming you were going in the correct direction, try putting it in the freezer for an hour. You may get just enough contraction to free up the carrier.

If the burrs are stuck the lower burr will turn together with upper burr carrier. Hold the center screw while someone else turns the upper burr carrier CLOCKWISE to loosen it. I think it might be good idea to keep the plastic dial removed but not such a great idea to use the screwdriver to turn the burr carrier I'd rather wrap a towel around it to prevent scratching and turn it by hand or use a large wrench to turn it.

Here are some pictures what it looks like when it's removed:

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips guys,

I think I will try to find a freezer big enough to hold the grinder (because mine isn't) and see if that works.

As far as I can tell the lower burrs are not turning at all, nothing is really. So holding the center screw will probably not work. I have tried turning the top burr with a wrench and a towel around it but the wrench isn't big enough to grab over the burr. And I'm afraid to apply force to just one side by grabbing the edge off the burr, I don't want it to change shape etc.

And if the freezer thing doesn't work I think I will have to wait until monday to contact the shop and see what they can do.

The idea is that upper burr is pressing against the lower burr like in a vice, the upward pressure is locking the upper burr carrier thread. When you try to move the upper burr carrier the the lower burr will follow this movement (at least horizontally) unless you you hold it with a spanner or some other tool.

If you find a fridge big enough you can try that but I'd be careful about condensation once you have taken it out. Finally having the burr carrier off and electrocuting yourself afterwards due to condensation inside the machine is not funny...if I were you I'd take it to the dealer on Monday and wouldn't bother anymore.

Seriously.

FWIW - when you have solved the current problem never adjust the grind setting while the burrs are not running because you may lock the burrs that way, see below for reference

I am sure you have plenty of nice Cafes in Amsterdam - why not go out and calibrate you taste buds for things to come? :)

Have a nice weekend!

Just a quick update. I decided to go for the supplier option. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for them to get back to me.

I'll post the results here when I know more.
