Looking at used mazzer major and need a small favor

Postby GewoW on Sun Oct 18, 2009 7:44 pm

I am looking to get a major, and may be able to get a deal on one that I can buy locally (not from a store). So i have a small request. Is there anyone with a major that can take a picture of the little sticker on the side (the one with motor/electrical/etc info on it) and post it? I want to make sure that if this happens, I get the right one. I know how it looks quite well, but I still want to be sure of something like this.

Thanks guys

*edit* i would also like to know if anyone knows anything about the serial #s of Majors associated to specific years of production. For examples, 0115xxx would be associated with what year?

Here's my one. Mine's ancient but still runs fabulously.

Sam, is that a 1998?

It's still a baby!

Hi Scott. Yep a 98. Great grinders these. Mine looks pretty tatty cosmetically but I kinda like that.

Thanks Sam,

I notice you live in New Zealand which is 240V if I am not mistaken. Given that I am in Montreal, I would be looking at someone with a sticker that has info for 120V. Is the sticker (other than the voltage) any different? Would the sticker normally mention that it's 7.5A?

Thanks again.

George where in Montreal to you shop for coffee related gear if you don't mind me asking? I've got family in Mtl who may be coming down to NZ at some point. I could be tempted to have them bring some stuff down :)

In terms of coffee related gear, as in espresso specifically, we're pretty limited in selection. There are 4 main (in my opinion) espresso stores in Mtl.

1- Le Cafe Creme - notably they sell Elektra machines and quite a few other coffee accessories
main address:
7119, rue St-Hubert
Montréal, Québec, H2S 2N1
Tel: 514-277-4554

2- Espresso Mali - biggest store with an amazing selection of cups and machines. They sponsor the regional barista championships and are a Nuova Simonelli dealer
7655 Boul. St-Laurent
Montréal, Québec, Canada
Phone: 514-270-9770 / 1-888-270-9770

3- Cafe Union - store that's been there for a while and has quite a selection of machines. Also has a decent selection of accessories, including knockboxes...which, lol, I can't seem to find anywhere but there.
149 Jean Talon West
Tel: 514-273-5555

4- Faema - machines...a lot of cups...old fashioned
14 Jean Talon West, Montreal, Quebec H2R 2W5
Tel: (514) 276-2671

They all sell coffee there, but I believe Cafe union roasts their own, the others bring it in.

Now, if you're looking for coffee houses, there are a few, but the most notable are (for their enjoyment, if they do not know):

1- Cafe Myriade - 2nd place Canadian Barista works there, so does Scott Rao (he autographed his book for me! - nice guy). They are serving their competition blend now. They sell it too (as well as other 49th parallel coffees). Best place I've been too, and they are very friendly
1432 Rue Mackay
Montreal, QC H3G 2H7
(514) 939-1717

2- Cafe in Gamba - they sell and serve black cat...good baristas, but I have received the occasional burnt coffee
5263 . Avenue du Parc . Montréal
Tél. 514-656-6852

3- Cafe Art Java - they serve and sell leftist (gimme coffee), but I have never been there
837 Avenue Mont-Royal East
Tel. 514-527-9990

4- Cafe Sante Veritas - they serve and sell Epic - been there once, liked it
480 bd St-Laurent,
Montréal, QC H2Y 3Y7
Tel: 514.510.7775

I probably over-posted with information that you may not need (at least not until you go visit them!!), but I'm bored of studying.

If you need something specific, I guess i can direct you to a store that is best suited for that.

Wow
Thanks for that! I'll check them out next time I visit. In the meantime I think at least one of those places could be near the Jean-Talon market.. might be able to get someone to pop in and have a look. Merci.

Hi
Here's are pics for a major I recently sold
http://drop.io/major_rt#

The label pic is about 2/3's of the way down.

It was the automatic version, so label said Major Auto

Good luck

This is the grinder I've been using in my kitchen for the past year or so. Oddly enough the torn parts of the sticker are the worst looking part of the whole unit - cosmetically it's quite nice everywhere else (as old Major's go). This is a former Starbucks shop grinder - which is true of the vast majority of used Major's you'll see on the open market in the US.
