La Pavoni PGB - jammed while replacing burrs

Postby sefa on Wed May 06, 2009 1:07 am

Hiya, first post :) Long time lurker though.

Just wondering if I could get some quick technical support. I've been passed down a La Pavoni PGB (branded as the Enzo Mini Macho where I am) grinder, that needed its burrs replaced. So I ordered the new part, and took it down to my local store where they dissasembled it and installed the bottom burr. I was then given the instructions on how to fit and adjust the top burr, and reassemble the whole think.

Back at home, I replaced the top burr, but ran into problems when adjusting/installing it. I was told that once fitted (loosely) back on, I should turn on the machine and check that the burrs where going, then turn it off and adjust the top burrs slightly tighter, untill the burrs where both going well.

However the problem comes in that i think I must have over adjusted it or something, and when I turned it on, the top bit got jammed suddenly, and currently isnt budging (at least by hand). I was just wondering if anyone could explain how I went wrong, and offer any ideas on how to fix things. The attached photo is just a town down view of the machine. You can see the top (jammed) burr ring part.

Note: Have also posted this over at coffee geek (http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/espresso/grinders/422313#422313 ) as I'm looking to get this solved asap - ideally before my machine arrives on Friday.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

1 - was it quite difficult to screw in the top burr?
if yes, then it may be cross threaded
if no:
2 - Does the "bottom" burr still turn?
if no, then the top burr has been screwed down against the bottom burr and they are locked together. This MAY possibly have been caused by the wrong burrs made for the opposite rotational direction...?? that is a guess.
if yes, then there is probably some coffee or other crud in the threads of the top burr locking it in place. Or, the threads should have been given a bit of grease...?

Before doing further damage, take it back to the repair shop and have them look it over.

Take out the top burr, and run the machine. If it runs you're OK, if it doesn't, you probably have brokent the transmission and need a new grinder.

Now:

-- Power off
-- Turn the top burr all the way down so it doesn't turn any more
-- Put in the parer scale so it shows zero at this point
-- Back off one quarter turn, paper scale should show 2 to 2.5

If it's an Italian espresso grinder, this will put you in the range for espresso.

Thanks for your replies. Manage to unjam and refit it, seems to be grinding well enough now.
