Very happy with mine (for a hand grinder), ergonomically it's much better than either the Lido or the HG-1 and the quality of the grind is good enough for me.
True, this mod is definitely not necessary, but I like it! YMMV. I like not having metal rubbing on metal, and I like fewer turns to lock on/off the catch cup. Plus, I had the o-ring on hand anyway.

I received an M47 today, directly from Frankfurt, just a few days after ordering. It resembles a coffee obelisk. It inspires confidence. Seriously, it appears indestructible and perfectly machined. I like the new screw-on catch cup.

With express shipping, this cost just under $300. Definitely worth $75 or so more than the Lido 3 (which I think was $200 + shipping) for durability alone. Also, the one-step grind adjustment with no fuss is really nice. I'm going to part with my Lido 3 on Craigslist to help fund this beauty, which I expect to last a lifetime (a 10-year warranty is a rare thing).

Will be testing this for coarse grind consistency (French press), in addition to espresso grind. Am keeping my Pharos as my main espresso grinder, but if the M47 comes close, I may sell the Pharos.

I Had the same first impression with my m47 and after about a month of daily use, it still feels like a super quality precision instrument. I use it for 2-3 espressos daily and it's truly a joy to use. I think Kinu may have improved on the adjustment system already too? Mine is a unlock, adjust and lock type, which works really well and no slipping of grind setting at all.
I also had a Pharos which I sold even before getting the m47, for ergonomic reasons. You are doing the right thing by keeping it to compare. I'd be interested to see how you compare the Pharos to m47 in the cup. Bigger burrs vs superior alignment, which one wins? Or do they cancel each other out? I can say that I've been making some very tasty espressos with the m47 so far.

Yesterday I visited Wouter Strietman to test Gabor's pressure meter. Very interesting piece and more than a gagdget. Wouter uses a profile from 11 bar gradually declining to zero. My profile is different: Almost flat throughout the extraction. Pressure about 6-7 bars. But that is not for this topic. I will write it up in the right topic as well.

We made shots with both the M47, M68 and HG One. Not much difference in the cup. The HG One is the fastest but requires much more strength. The M68 very comfortable. No surprise. The M47 was the slowest but still pretty fast. Biggest surprise for was that we both agreed that the tastiest shots were the ones ground with his Mazzer Mini E with Super Jolly burrs. At least for the very light roast natural from Brasil we used.

I think that all these big conicals are pretty much equal in the cup. Best to chose on price, looks, ergonomics, strength requires etc. The M47 can compete with these bigger conicals. And some coffees prefer a flat and some a conical burr. Better have both. :wink:

Bas, very interesting day of coffee you had! I would have expected the m68 to shine brighter than the HG-1 due to the superior alignment. I base this on comments from the Monolith conical thread where most agree the monolith made better coffee than other titan grinders. Especially interesting was the head to head vberch did between monolith and robur where the monolith basically wiped the floor with the robur, it wasn't even close. Both TDS, EY, and taste. I can only attribute the difference to better alignment and tighter tolerances. Also surprising was the mazzer mini winning the day!

I didnt expect the M47 to be anywhere near the HG-One which I had pretty high in my head! Seems that burr design and allignment do make a difference!
I should already have my M47 but DHL didnt take in account my notes concerning the delivery time,so now I'm on a trip(without my grinder :cry: ) and I should get in a few days when I get back. Really excited!

@randyh:

I suppose this Hg One (v1) had good alignment...I have tested one in the past with imperfect alignment with bad results...

No scientific testing yesterday, just a couple of shots. So I am not making hard claims here!

But in general the difference between the flat burr and the three conicals was more distinctive than in between the conicals with the coffee (Brasil natural light roast) we used.

With all grinders we got nice and centered mouse tail extractions without any signs of channeling or Spritzers.

How much is the M38 and M47 with shipping? Also, roughly how long does it take to ship if you get one?
