As a side note when ordering a Monolith, a person might consider purchasing a Levtamp tamper from Denis. I recently got one and have found that getting a perfectly flat, level tamp is a breeze! I have the short mushroom topped one.

Agreed. The LevTamp is amazing and is the only tamper I need. All of my other tampers are sitting unused and collecting dust in a corner.

I have done just that with my upcoming conical. I asked for Cherry wood for my top cap and to use the same wood for my Levi Tamp.

As you can see I have 1 straight sided flat bottom and top, a taper sided flat (KafaTek), a taper sided euro curved Reg Barber that I tapered and the LevTamp.

How is this lev tamp adjustable? for example if i am using 20g basket and dosing only 16-17g and grinds come way below ridge so this tamper wont actually "tamp" it or i am missing something?

The levtamp only keeps it level. It does not do any kind of pressure or depth restriction aside from the max depth of the piston. Restricted by its length, not any other settings.
Here is a quick photo of the piston plunged to its max depth
Looks like mine is an older model with a thicker leveling plate thingy. It can probably extend further on current models like the other one shown.

I admire the build quality and precision that my Lev-Tamp has. My only complaint is how the coffee powder collects in and around that top leveling plate and eventually on the shaft itself. It's not the easiest to clean. My little rocket blower is useful in keeping ahead of any collected residue, after learning the hard way, setting the Lev-Tamp aside for a bit and using another tamper, when I came back to it, the spring and piston action was actually stuck just from a small amount of old stale coffee powder. It's easier now to just blast it out every other day or so, to prevent that.

But getting back on topic with this thread, I've noted the last few days that I'm really quite happy with the output of my Mono-Con as a filter grinder too. My R120 is out on loan to a friend, so I figured I might as well put the Mono-Con to the test. In my case, simply setting the indicator at the large bean logo on the left side gives me an excellent filter grind. Switching back and forth is too easy to ignore. I made a sparkling cup of Juan Pena's (Ecuadoran) Typica and I marveled at it's flavor separation and clarity.

That's very generous of you! You should let me borrow your R120 indefinitely and continue to use your monolith.

Will you switch back to the R120 eventually?
