I got a nail stuck in my doser... help? - Page 2

Success!

A kind thank you to the 7 of you who swarmed this topic with advice.

I decided that the best option was to hit the pin through from the bottom, little bits at a time, to see if I could loosen up the nail. That's what worked. Sorry for the anticlimactic ending. I certainly had thought about doing so yesterday, but it took me until today to find a something suitable with which to hit the pin. With persistence, grabbing at the nail really low, and a victorious fist pump, it came free about the time the pin was level with the bottom of the doser.

I don't know exactly how the nail got stuck. I think Randy is right in that it probably just went into the center of the pin. Regardless...

Don't ever use a nail to remove the pin from a Mazzer doser. Period.

Hey now... when you get 7 of them it starts to get annoying. :) Not only was my doser unusable because of a tiny nail, it was constantly attacking me when I was trying to help it. Why is the metal so sharp anyways?

When I pop that pin I use a nail that just fits the hole and turn it upside down so that I am tapping on the pointed end and driving the pin with the flat end of the nail.

That is a roll pin, hollow in the middle as you found out. Go to the hardware store and get yourself a small 1/16 inch punch. It will avoid the problem you had. You essentially created a wedge with that nail, driving it into the center of the roll pin and fairing out the pin. You could also take another 2 penny nail, cut the point off and insert it through the underside and tap the other nail out the top. Probably would have been easier than ripping it out with pliers.

I wish I had seen this when I ran into trouble but my solution was a nail set like this used for things like crown molding. Sorry I only ran across this after the fact.:

I hit that from the bottom up back into the doser. I feel your pain man!
That retaining pin made me pretty crazy.
