How to handle conical grinder

Postby klemenv on Thu Mar 18, 2010 3:49 am

Hi,

I just receive Fiorenzato Doge Conico. It is a small change, compared to my KitchenAid. :)

I usually drink single espresso's. Usually I am grinding 9g of coffee to get 8.5g out of grinder and dose 7.5g.

Well, not with conical :) And doser is really not doing its job with single espresso's grinding on demand.

So, my question is, how to handle conical grinder? What is best way, to avoid stale coffee and not to waste too much coffee. ( At least I am home roasting, so that lowers my coffee bill somehow.)

You can tapemod the doser to sweep cleaner.
I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. I dose per shot, and use a brush and a couple of pulses to get every gram out of the grinder.

Some people load the hopper with a weighed amount and grind every shot individually, scooping as much as they can out of the grind chamber with a chopstick. This seems like an enormous pain in the ass to me, and probably not terribly consistent from shot to shot. Using this method, you still have to grind out all the stale coffee in the grind path if you want it to be fresh.

My K10 is known to have less grind retention than similar large conicals like the Robur, but I still waste an awful lot of coffee grinding out the stale stuff every session. If I'm making a milk drink, I sometimes don't grind out quite as much waste beforehand, but it's pretty obvious if I had stale grounds in the basket, because the first shot extracts faster and less evenly. Most of my sessions involve 2-3 doubles, so I'm losing at least 15-20% of the coffee I buy.

I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to waste an awful lot of coffee. The quality of the output, in terms of distribution and effort to pull a high quality shot, is enough to make me live with it. The only large conical I know of that's better in this respect is the Elektra Nino, which has a grinding chamber specifically designed to hold significantly less coffee.

I would probably re-think my usage and choice of grinder if I only wanted to pull a single now and then.

I've been grinding a weighed dose of beans (no hopper) with my K10WBC & I'm seeing very little waste. I modified the plastic chute for better brush access & faster flow so its no problem reaching in with an acid brush & quickly clearing the burr chamber/chute area.

If you fill the hopper, you will have to sacrificial grind 3 to 4 grams on each round to get fresh coffee. if you single dose, you can pulse the grinder, then sweep the chute, 3 to 4 times. You'll see the moment when the grinds coming out become trivial (i.e less than a 1/4 gram). If you don't trust your eyeballing, just weigh in ten grams, then grind, dose, weigh, pulse, dose and weigh, etc, until you know what the requirements are.

Got to be careful with the sweeping and pulsing. I've broken my sweeper vanes today. All three. The glue is drying. I hope it works. :(
The burr was still spinning down when i sticked my brush in. I think the sweeper is a failsafe to protect the motor and planetary gears.
